A Hodge Podge of Stuff
Hey, thanks for all the response posts! It's great to get a little feedback. Bob asked when it hits the shelves. I really don't know. I found out that Amazon is shipping it and we got it here at the church, but it takes awhile to get to bookstores.
The timing of this book being released really is so special. I officially stepped into the Senior pastor position at our church on September 19. And now, through this book, I'm trying to spread a passion for the local church.
I just got Watermark's new CD and Chris Tomlin's "Arriving". Both are great.
I've been praying for awhile that God would help me figure out how to get more exercise in my life (didn't I say this was a hodge podge of thoughts?) and I've discovered it: TENNIS! Me and my buddy Joe are bringing tennis back. Now Shannon and I are going and playing on our date nights. A lot of fun. So much better than jogging. I'm not good but I like pretending.

Record Catch with a Barbie Fishing Rod: This is a pretty funny story. Will you look at that fish? It's bigger than the girl. It's a good thing she handed it over to her grandpa. That catfish would have dragged her away.
Blue Like Obama: Popular Christian author Donald Miller will deliver the closing prayer at the Democratic Convention on Monday night. AP Religion Writer Eric Gorski reports that originally Cameron Strang, "the 32-year-old editor of edgy and hip Relevant Magazine," was scheduled to do it but had second thoughts and pulled out. "Citing fears that his bridge-building gesture would be wrongly construed as an endorsement, Strang said he instead hopes to take a lower-profile role, participating in a convention caucus meeting on religion later in the week." The article notes that Strang found Donald Miller, author of the popular spiritual memoir 'Blue Like Jazz' to offer the prayer in his place. (Hat Tip: Mike Allen) [Update: Here's a transcript of Miller's prayer.]
Modest Clothing Trend: Styles come and go. Could there be shift toward a more modest, layered look on the rise among women? An article entitled "Mom Shocked by Teen's Modest Clothing" at CNN.com says there is. The article says, "At the spring Paris fashion shows, Stephanie Meyerson -- trend director for youth culture at Stylesight, a retail forecasting firm -- saw a definite "moving away from overtly sexual" in teen fashion, especially through layering and comfortable baggy looks. "Girls are dressing for themselves, as opposed to dressing for guys," she said. "The guys might not like it but the girls are not wearing really tight shirts. They're covered up."

Church?
"I am reading Joshua Harris book Stop Dating the Church...love it. He talks about the people who believe they can be Christians and never go to church. I have heard this argument many times. They don't believe you have to fellowship..." (Read full post here.)
Jargon Meets Advice
"Boy Meets Girl: I read part of this back when I bought it 7-ish years ago. If you get past the jargon-y parts it has some solid advice." (Read full post here.)
A Brief Review
"I think this book [Sex is Not the Problem (Lust Is)] would appeal to both teenagers and parents, although I would give the parents the book first to read. This is not explicit in its language but it does tackle the difficult questions." (Read full post here.)

Happy anniversary to you and Shannon! :)
I just sat down and read your new book in one sitting. As a 21-year-old who was born on a Thursday, was carried to church that Sunday, and has been going to the same church ever since, I'm not the typical church-dater, but my commitment isn't always what it should be. Thank you so much for the great reminders.
After reading it, I have two questions. First of all, is that Shannon on the front cover? It looks like it could be. :) Second, on a more serious note: what do you think of the trend sweeping through the nation's churches of going through books like "The Purpose Drive Life" as a congregation, the pastor's sermons centering around a chapter each Sunday, etc. I'm not in favor of it, but would be very curious to hear your thoughts on it.
Thank you!

Hey, Gretchen!
No, that isn't Shannon on the cover. I wish I could have had her do it, that would have been cool. It's just a model that they used. They did a special photoshoot for the book in Portland or Seattle. I can't remember which.
In regard to your second question I haven't read the book you mentioned. I've heard that God is using it evangelistically in the lives of many people though, and for that I give thanks. But as a pastor my first preference is to preach from a specific passage of scripture and draw the message from that.
But you know I think it's hard for many pastors today because there isn't support and encouragement from church members to simply preach God's word (I'm not implying the book in question isn't based on God's word, I hope you understand my point). But too often I think pastors feel pressured to entertain or package things in a special or somehow unique way. I hope that more members will love God's word and be the kind of Christians who encourage their pastors to stick to the meat of God's word without apology.

Thanks so much for responding, Josh. I appreciate your comments and have passed them on to my dad (our church is considering going through that book, and my dad is a deacon).
I just posted a review of your book on my blog and said it was a must-read. (I'm the same girl whose website is slowly but surely getting the NA magazine back issues online. :)) Thanks so much for your ministry. It has made a difference in so many lives--not only in your church back there, but in your family's church here in Oregon (where I know a bunch of people), and in the "universal Body of Christ" all across the world. I hope you don't give up writing along with your travelling--God has given you a platform (and a place on the bestsellers list) and I hope that as He directs you can continue to use that.
