We've been speaking of our rights. This week, Al Mohler took on the subject with a slightly different slant:
Harvard law professor Mary Ann Glendon warned years ago that a contagion of "rights talk" was ruining our ability to conduct a serious moral discussion. When every major issue is reduced to "rights," the moral considerations go into a melt-down. When rights inevitably conflict and collide, there is no way to resolve the problem.Mohler goes on to describe one unexpected and tragic consequence that the cherished "right" of "choice" has brought about: women's rights champions have made it possible for millions of baby girls to be aborted because of their gender. And so a "right" supposedly meant to empower women is actually resulting in the slaughter of women. Our moral choices have to be informed by more than our rights. Everything about this breaks my heart. There's no mistaking that. But what hurts even more is the fact that most of these babies are gone because some of these mothers have the attitude that "I can because I said I can.... no MAN can tell me other wise." Lets face it, if the woman had a husband (boyfriend?) father or grandfather even that was supportive even just to help her through the pregnancy and get the baby to an adoption agency, we'd see this LESS often. (Like every abortion story, we still have guys pleading for it and the woman saying no...) But it's pride on the woman's side that says "I've been hurt and its the man's fault.... I only want boys because thats what THEY want... abortion's no big deal.
Who cares about murder?
This is an enlightening article. Isn't this the way it always goes...
it breaks my heart.
