The Passing of Dr. William S. H. Piper

I learned late Tuesday night that John Piper's father died. A friend emailed me the news. As a result of his father's passing, Piper wasn't able to speak at the Wednesday evening session of the Shepherd's Conference and so John MacArthur asked our friend CJ Mahaney to serve in his place. Appropriately, CJ preached on humility. From Tim Challies' account, it sounds as though he did an outstanding job. I only wish I could have been there to hear him.
This morning I finally had the chance to read John Piper's journal entry on the death of his father. I read it and quietly cried. I cried because it so perfectly captured the normalcy and poignancy of the moment. I cried out of gratefulness to God for Dr. William S.H. Piper who raised a son who has so mightily served the Savior--I want to raise my boy to love the gospel like him. And I cried as considered my own father and how dearly I love him.
Find a quiet spot and read "Hello, My Father Just Died." It will be good for your soul as you consider the humbling end we all will face.
One day I'll say goodbye to my father. One day I'll breathe my last breath.
Because of the same glorious Jesus Christ who John Piper and his daddy trust in, those days will not be without hope.

Pilgrim's Progress Musical: Pilgrim is a modern musical adaptation of John Bunyan's classic work, Pilgrim's Progress. It was performed in spring 2009 by the high school students at my church. They did a great job. The script is by theatre professionals (and members of our church) Janice Mays and Cathy Mays. The music is by various artists, including Bob Kauflin, Zach Jones and Mark Altrogge. You can order a DVD of the production here.
Give Me An Answer Highschool Conference: I'm looking forward to joining Al Mohler, Russell Moore, Shane & Shane and hip-hop artist Flame at the SBTS conference for highschool students next spring. Details.
Stephen Altrogge Reviews Dug Down Deep: Over at the Blazing Center blog they've posted a very generous review of the book. Read it.

I have always love and been inspired by the ministry of John Piper. It's sad that His father passed away, but what a great way to return to the Lord! He left a legacy in so many lives. He definitely left one in John's. I too want to influence my children's life in a godly way, and be the very best example of God's love and faithfulness.
John Piper's article was a great read! I cried too

I read and cried of John Piper dad.
I have benefitted from his teaching.
That is why i can't wait for the Rapture because of death.

Bill Piper's funeral was an amazing tribute to a godly man and an amazing God.
I was able to attend the funeral in Greenville, where I am a student.
I wrote an article on my time there and my respect for the Piper family.

oh lord my God, when I'm in awesome wonder...consider all the worlds thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the roaring thunder thy power though out the universe display.
Then sing my soul my savior god to Thee how great thou art....How great Thou Art
Then sing my soul my savior god to Thee how great Thou Art
