A few weeks ago I shared the story of my run-in with Ali G. In this short clip from the same message I illustrate the point that discernment requires resisting the world's way of thinking. I point out that this resistence often results in the world's disapproval and rejection of us. I tell the story of my painful and humorous experience of being featured on Ira Glass's radio show This American Life.
I’m a follower of Jesus Christ. I live in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with an amazing wife and three wacky, fun kids. I'm a pastor at Covenant Life Church. I’m also a writer.
My friend Donald Miller shares a helpful tip for writers: get a kitchen timer. Don explains, "When I have two or three writing assignments I just make a list, then pick one, then set my little timer for an hour or twenty minutes or whatever amount of time that specific assignment will cost me. And then, while the timer is ticking away on my desk, I don't let myself do anything else....When the timer goes off, I decide whether I want to keep working on it, or move on. It's a simple tool, but it works." Read more.
Tim Challies asks whether he's ready to address his Google search history with God. "What would I say to him if he were to ask me about the things I have gone looking for online? Could I tell him with confidence that what I have sought is an indication of a heart that is aligned with his purposes? Or would I have to confess that my searches point to a heart that is drawn to what is evil and perverse?" Read the post.

Thanks again for posting up the YouTube clip a few weeks ago about Ali G. That clip got me started on downloading your sermons, which have been an incredible blessing! I go for a 5 mile run about every other day, and for the past few weeks I've been listening to your sermons while running, and have been so blessed by your Biblical teachings.
So, I just wanted to send a shout out of encouragement to you to keep up the great work! You are ministering to so many folks in a profound way. Thanks to your church also for keeping up so many of your sermons in the archives - that is awesome.
I'm leading 3,700 folks in 70 countries through the One Year Bible this year, and in one of my recent weekly emails I encouraged them to download your sermons. So you may be getting some more new folks in your remote "flock". You can check out my email promo of your online sermons here, 3rd paragraph:

Don't let any of this go to your head of course! :) Please stay humble and press on with the Gospel. Thanks a million. I've got another jog tomorrow, and I think I'll be on Purity sermon #3, which I'm psyched to hear!
God bless,
Mike

Love that, Josh! This reminds me of a precious moment that occured at a baptism at our church this year. After a teenager was baptisted an older man gave him some encouragement and said: (you have to insert the brother's African Amercian accent here as they're both African American) "Now you're going to have to decide whether you're going to be cool with the world or cool with God because it can't be both!"
What a breath of fresh air! Thank you for your humble, gracious and firm approach to the truth.
