Get to Love Him Best of All
"If you make doctrine the main thing, you are very likely to grow narrow-minded. If you make your own experience the main thing, you will become gloomy and critical of others. If you make ordinances the main thing, you will be apt to grow merely formal. But you can never make too much of the living Christ Jesus. Remember that all things else are for his sake. Doctrines and ordinances are the planets, but Christ is the sun. Get to love him best of all."--Charles Spurgeon
I appreciate this quote because instead of pitting doctrine over and against love for Jesus, Spurgeon puts it in right priority. It's not that we abandon doctrine to love Jesus, but we remember that all things are for his sake. We study doctrine because we want to know and love Jesus more. We observe the ordinances because we want to remember and proclaim what Jesus has done for us. We cherish our experience so far as it leads us to greater affection and zeal for the Savior. He is the sun. Every other priority and activity of the Christian life orbits around him.

Bad Guy Caught With a Mac: This is a great story. A girl's Apple laptop gets stolen but she uses a remote access program to control it and takes a picture of the thief as the doofus sits in front of the stolen computer. "Smile! You're getting your mug shot taken!" Using the picture, the police nab the bad guy. Moral of the story? Don't mess with a high-tech girl's Mac.
New Word Alive's Top 10: The recent New Word Alive conference showed a video top-ten list of books for students. My book Sex is Not the Problem made the list. It's pretty funny. I just wish mine could have made it in the wok.

Church?
"I am reading Joshua Harris book Stop Dating the Church...love it. He talks about the people who believe they can be Christians and never go to church. I have heard this argument many times. They don't believe you have to fellowship..." (Read full post here.)
Jargon Meets Advice
"Boy Meets Girl: I read part of this back when I bought it 7-ish years ago. If you get past the jargon-y parts it has some solid advice." (Read full post here.)
A Brief Review
"I think this book [Sex is Not the Problem (Lust Is)] would appeal to both teenagers and parents, although I would give the parents the book first to read. This is not explicit in its language but it does tackle the difficult questions." (Read full post here.)

Great reminder!

This relates perfectly to the study of [italic]Systematic Theology[/italic] by Wayne Grudem that is starting up over at The Rebelution. What a great reminder of the balance we need as we study doctrine!

Once again, Mr. Spurgeon gets it right! Thanks for sharing this.

I second that...a great reminder to keep the right perspective on things. Doctrine is good insofar that it leads us to Christ and not to vain head knowledge apart from Christ. Good stuff.
