Daring to Be Holy
Today I came across a quote I'd written in my journal. In his book Holiness, J.C. Ryle quotes puritan William Gurnall:
"Say not that thou hast royal blood in thy veins and art born of God unless thou canst prove thy pedigree by daring to be holy."The grace that justifies us also sanctifies us. If we are in Christ, if we are sons and daughters of the King, then we will dare to be holy. Our obedience cannot make us righteous before God; but those declared righteous by grace alone through faith alone will dedicate themselves to the pursuit of holiness.

This comment is of particular relevance and importance today, when some theologians are denying that holiness is a necesaary evidence of justification. Heb 10:14 says, "by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy". They have been perfected forever by the sactifice of Christ; and are now being made holy, being sanctified. The great statement on justification by grace through faith alone is Eph 2:8ff, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus TO DO GOOD WORKS, which God prepared in advance formus to do" (emphasis mine).
