Jerry Bridges' New iPod

Today our church was blessed to have Jerry Bridges preach. This godly, faithful man is best known for his books like The Pursuit of Holiness and The Discipline of Grace
. He's also an outstanding Bible teacher who has served with the Navigators since 1955. Jerry is a dear friend of Covenant Life. He's been teaching at the Sovereign Grace Pastors College for the past eleven years and nearly every time he's done so, he has also preached at our church.
This year we wanted to do something a little special to honor him. We decided that the man needed an iPod. We called his wife, Jane, and were delighted to discover that he didn't have one, but had been interested in getting something to play some MP3s someone had given him. So in the first service we presented him with a classic iPod. And in the second meeting we gave him a pair of Bose noise-canceling headphones. (We also displayed the "iPod Ad" picture of Jerry seen above. The church got a kick out of that).
Jerry travels a lot—this year he logged 120,000 miles in the air—so we're happy to think that he will now be able to spend some of that time flying listening to sermons, watching vodcasts, and grooving to whatever music 77-year-olds like to groove to!
On Saturday night our family hosted Jerry for dinner. Shannon cooked an amazing dinner and afterwards we got a picture of our three little ones with him. I told my kids that one day when they are older they will read many of Mr. Bridges' books, and I wanted them to remember that God allowed them to meet him in person.

If you've never read any of Jerry's books, let me recommend a few:
The Gospel for Real Life
This book explains why Christians need the Gospel. It will help you apply the Gospel to your life and pursuit of holiness.
The Discipline of Grace
If you're not sure about the relationship between God's mercy and our disciplines, or want to learn how to live day by day relying on and working in God's grace, this is a book for you.
Respectable Sins
If you want to deepen conviction about the sins you've grown comfortable with, read this book.
The Pursuit of Holiness
If you're unsure how to grow more like Jesus, this book shows your role and God's role in your pursuit of holiness.
Trusting God
Whether your suffering is great or small, this book can help you grow in trusting God and worshiping him for his glorious, mysterious, loving ways.

Bad Guy Caught With a Mac: This is a great story. A girl's Apple laptop gets stolen but she uses a remote access program to control it and takes a picture of the thief as the doofus sits in front of the stolen computer. "Smile! You're getting your mug shot taken!" Using the picture, the police nab the bad guy. Moral of the story? Don't mess with a high-tech girl's Mac.
New Word Alive's Top 10: The recent New Word Alive conference showed a video top-ten list of books for students. My book Sex is Not the Problem made the list. It's pretty funny. I just wish mine could have made it in the wok.
Challies on Do Hard Things: Here's a review by Tim Challies of my brothers' new book Do Hard Things.

Church?
"I am reading Joshua Harris book Stop Dating the Church...love it. He talks about the people who believe they can be Christians and never go to church. I have heard this argument many times. They don't believe you have to fellowship..." (Read full post here.)
Jargon Meets Advice
"Boy Meets Girl: I read part of this back when I bought it 7-ish years ago. If you get past the jargon-y parts it has some solid advice." (Read full post here.)
A Brief Review
"I think this book [Sex is Not the Problem (Lust Is)] would appeal to both teenagers and parents, although I would give the parents the book first to read. This is not explicit in its language but it does tackle the difficult questions." (Read full post here.)

Josh,
I have heard a lot of sermons and 'reasons' on why I should be holy, but Jerry Bridges was the first person to ever how me the joy in holiness. I read his book on holiness a little over a year ago and a "pursuit" is exactly what it has been. The joy that I have found in holiness which I gain in my overall pursuit of God has helped, more than anything, shape my character and helped me to be the godly man God calls me too.
I am getting married in 13 days and my fiancee will agree that my hunger for holiness has changed my life. I say all this just to show my thanks and grattitude to Jerry Bridges.

My favorite book in that list is "Discipline of Grace". I've only read a couple of chapters, but already it is tranforming my life!
To get to meet him in person...WOW!
I can't wait for Heaven when I'll be able to spend time with him and all the other great believers face to face!

What a privilege to have Jerry Bridges over for dinner. That truly will be an event to remember.
Great idea about the iPod as well. Nothing cooler than seeing technology meet godliness...

I have a signed copy of Jerry Bridges' book Trusting God. I was in my local evangelical bookshop in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I was about to hand over the money for the book when the owner said "would you like a singed copy?" I said "I don't really care for that sort of thing." The owner then said "well maybe you could meet the author, he is standing right behind you." I did meet him, shook his hand and got the book signed.
The funny thing is I had never saw a picture of him or ever heard him speak. He had wrote like a giant and I had pictured a large deep-voiced man. But Jerry was small, elderly and softly spoken. Jerry is, in many real ways, a large and deep-voiced man to me. His books always build me up in godliness.
