Resurrection
This past Sunday I preached from 1 Corinthians 15:12-34 on the physical resurrection of believers. I was reminded again how important it is for followers of Christ to think rightly about heaven and the hope we have beyond this life. False teaching leads to false living. That's true in many areas, but especially when it comes to the good news of what Jesus has accomplished through his death and resurrection. Losing sight of the certain hope of resurrection and eternal life with Christ on a renewed earth saps our spiritual passion and strengthens the grip of the fleeting pleasures of sin on our soul. Here are a few quotes I came across during my study. I hope they encourage you:
"The great weapon with which the disciples of Jesus set out to conquer the world was not a mere comprehension of eternal principles; it was an historical message, an account of something that had recently happened, it was the message, 'He is risen.'" -- J. Gresham Machen, Christianity & Liberalism, page 28
"The physical resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of redemption--both for mankind and for the earth. Indeed, without Christ's resurrection and what it means--an eternal future for fully restored human beings dwelling on a fully restored Earth--there is no Christianity." -- Randy Alcorn, Heaven, page 109"Someday you will read or hear that Bill Graham is dead. Don't you believe a word of it! I shall be more alive then than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God." -- Billy Graham

Pilgrim's Progress Musical: Pilgrim is a modern musical adaptation of John Bunyan's classic work, Pilgrim's Progress. It was performed in spring 2009 by the high school students at my church. They did a great job. The script is by theatre professionals (and members of our church) Janice Mays and Cathy Mays. The music is by various artists, including Bob Kauflin, Zach Jones and Mark Altrogge. You can order a DVD of the production here.
Give Me An Answer Highschool Conference: I'm looking forward to joining Al Mohler, Russell Moore, Shane & Shane and hip-hop artist Flame at the SBTS conference for highschool students next spring. Details.
Stephen Altrogge Reviews Dug Down Deep: Over at the Blazing Center blog they've posted a very generous review of the book. Read it.

Josh,
This sermon was absolutely incredible! I am checking covlife.org regularly to see if it's up for me to listen to again! Such a needed reminder.
Thank you for recommending Randy Alcorn's Heaven books, as well. Those books reveal reality to us and make living for the fleeting pleasures of this life completely ridiculous. I was one of those who used to think Heaven was all about singing for eternity and floating on a cloud like you described. When I first read Deadline I was blown away and have read the others since...we have all the books for children too. Thank you for pointing us to the resurrection and the truth that is revealed which strengthens us to live for something more than this present age. I am so weak and tempted to find pleasure in this world. Your strong words regarding this were a breath of fresh air, full of life!
I encourage everyone to download this sermon and listen to it over and over!
Because of His death and resurrection,
Mindy

Thanks, Kerrin! Just so everyone else knows Kerrin is an old friend of mine. So he's allowed to remind me that I'm short, bald and decaying. Thank God for the promise of resurrection. I'm ready!
Mindy, your encouragement is meaningful (especially compared to Kerrin's!) I'm so glad you've read and benefited from Randy's books. He's served the Church so much through his writing about eternity.
