My friend Donald Miller shares a helpful tip for writers: get a kitchen timer. Don explains, "When I have two or three writing assignments I just make a list, then pick one, then set my little timer for an hour or twenty minutes or whatever amount of time that specific assignment will cost me. And then, while the timer is ticking away on my desk, I don't let myself do anything else....When the timer goes off, I decide whether I want to keep working on it, or move on. It's a simple tool, but it works." Read more.

Hi Josh, sorry it's off the topic but I just want to ask, why is your book "stop dating the church" isn't available in the Philippines? I've been looking for it but to no avail. I hope I can grab a copy of it soon.
Hi Josh, the video is great, and I am already excited to listen to the messages at your church's website, but while I was watching the video I've got a question in my mind, how in the world a church can have such a high quality video done just to promote the series, I mean how does it happen, do you pay for someone to make, you just have gifted people in your congregation willing to put time and money on it... just trying to understand, I am not criticizing it, I would love to be able to do those kinds of things at the small church I am starting in mid-west Brazil, I am just wondering how does it happen.

Thanks for your question. First, I'd say that in the big scheme of things video are absolutely unessential to the mission of the church. So don't worry if you never do them! We use them sparingly. In this case we wanted to get folks excited about a new series that is particularly aimed at bringing guests.
Second, we've done a lot of different things when it comes to video. In the past it was all volunteer. We invested in young adults in our church by doing video-training classes. Now because video work is so time-intensive we use a mix of volunteer/staff and paid freelance. In this case we hired two young men (one of whom was trained in those early classes) to do the Psalms series videos. David and Mike are godly young men who are building a business and we view it as a way to support their work and vision. In the future we will not be able to afford their services since we hope they'll be making God-glorifying block-buster movies (or more likely cool independent films that storm through Sundance and Cannes).
