D. A. Carson on "Redeeming the Culture"
In an interview with Derek Thomas about his book Christ and Culture Revisited, Dr. D. A. Carson answered the question, "Why don't you like the terminology of 'redeeming the culture'?" Here's his answer:
Redemption terminology in the NT is so bound up with Christ's work for and in the church that to extend it to whatever good we do in the broader world risks a shift in focus. Not for a moment do I want to deny that we are to serve as salt and light, that exiles may be called to do good in the pagan cities where Providence has appointed them to live (Jer 29), that every square foot of this world is under Christ's universal reign (even though that reign is still being contested), that the nations of the world will bring their "goods" into the Jerusalem that comes down from above. But many of those who speak easily and fluently of redeeming the culture soon focus all their energy shaping fiscal and political policies and the like, and merely assume the gospel. A gospel that is merely assumed, that does no more than perk away in the background while the focus of our attention is on the "redemption" of the culture in which we find ourselves, is lost within a generation or two. At the same time, I worry about Christians who focus their attention so narrowly on getting people "saved" that they care little about doing good to all people, even if especially to the household of God. Getting this right is not easy, and inevitably priorities will shift a little in various parts of the world, under various regimes. Part of the complexity of the discussion, I think, is bound up with what the church as church is responsible for, and what Christians as Christians are responsible for: I have argued that failure to make this distinction tends to lead toward sad conclusions.Read the full interview.

Pilgrim's Progress Musical: Pilgrim is a modern musical adaptation of John Bunyan's classic work, Pilgrim's Progress. It was performed in spring 2009 by the high school students at my church. They did a great job. The script is by theatre professionals (and members of our church) Janice Mays and Cathy Mays. The music is by various artists, including Bob Kauflin, Zach Jones and Mark Altrogge. You can order a DVD of the production here.
Give Me An Answer Highschool Conference: I'm looking forward to joining Al Mohler, Russell Moore, Shane & Shane and hip-hop artist Flame at the SBTS conference for highschool students next spring. Details.
Stephen Altrogge Reviews Dug Down Deep: Over at the Blazing Center blog they've posted a very generous review of the book. Read it.

"Getting this right is not easy, and inevitably priorities will shift a little in various parts of the world..."
Very true. It's so easy for us to point and say, "you're not doing it right", but to walk it out "right" ourselves is truly challenging. And yet it is what we are called to. Thanks be to our redeemer for his supply of all our needs to do so.
Thanks for pointing us to this Josh, and may we all work towards this end.

i wonder why Christ has commissioned us to 'make disciples' of all people groups rather than 'redeeming' the culture or the people groups. if discipleship is at the core of our Lord's last commission, i wonder where our focus shall be - redeeming culture or bringing a person to a 'COMMITTED' apprenticeship to Christ.

Seems like what "redeming the culture" or "knowing culture" means for many is watching a lot of questionable movies, going to bars, drinking more brewskis than Southern Baptist preachers are comfortable with, etc., so that we can "engage culture." A lot of getting drunk and forgetting the covenant with our eyes. Not a lot of redeeming going on, if we would be honest about it.
