Psalm 56: The Fearful, Part 4
Continuing the series on fearfulness, the fourth question I want us to consider is:
Why should I work to overcome fear?
There are some of us whose who have experienced extreme forms of fear. Maybe your experience of fear is so great that it controls and limits you. For people experiencing this kind of fear, it's obvious why you want to turn away from it. If you've been crippled by an ongoing pattern of fear, I realize that a single sermon can't address all the issues you're facing. Hopefully, though, your pastor can help you work through your fear.
Most people wouldn't categorize their fear as serious. We might not even think of our thoughts and worry as being fear. We think of it as prudence—maybe even wisdom. We're so familiar with fear that we often call it "thinking" or "planning". As Ed Welch says, "Worriers are visionaries minus the optimism."
This kind of fear seems manageable, even normal. Should we even give thought to it?
I think we should. Even if you don't put your fear in the "big deal" category, I would encourage you to examine your fears and worry. What does it tell you about the focus of your heart? What does it reveal about who you're trusting in?
And here's the important question: what is fear keeping you from?
We're all going to face fear. Our goal is not a fear-free existence. But fear becomes a problem when it keeps us from doing what God wants us to do. Fear is a problem when it has more say in guiding us than God does.
So is there any place where your fear is keeping you from doing what you know God wants you to do?
て「 Is your fear of physical harm keeping you from going on an overseas missions trip?
て「 Is your fear of failure keeping you from stepping out in a new, spirit-inspired venture in your career?
て「 Is your fear of rejection keeping you from pursuing marriage?
て「 Is your fear of people's opinion holding you back from exercising spiritual gifts God has placed in you?
て「 Is your fear about your financial future, stealing your joy in generosity?
て「 Is your fear of your kids not turning out right causing you to parent harshly instead of with grace?
て「 Is your fear of people's opinion keeping you from sharing the gospel with someone you love?
Do you see how fear can hinder us from the joy of obeying our King? Who are you obeying? Whose voice are you listening to? The voice of worry and fear, or the voice of your Father in Heaven who calls you to trust him and take risks for his kingdom?

I was just reading in the book of Matthew today and the part where Peter doubted Jesus and began to sink reminded me of myself. So often I step out into the unknown, trusting God; but then I feel the strength of the wind and see the churning water beneath me and the high waves all about me and I become terrified and I begin to sink. But where He takes me, He can uphold me; where He leads me, He will walk beside me; where I live, He will dwell with me; if I will abide in Him and believe in who He is, there is rest from the tempest that rages all around me. When I begin to sink and I cry out to Him, He reaches out His Hand and corrects me -- every time. Within His Will, loving His Law and obeying His Voice, I am safe -- and there alone am I safe. When the winds blow, when the sea rages, when I feel that I am sinking . . . I must tear my eyes from all these fears and place my gaze on Him alone -- I must seek His Face. He is Faithful and Good and Loving -- this I know. All that He withholds was not the best -- He knows; all that He allows that I feared is for my good -- yes, only He knows. I will not trust the appearance or feel of a situation more than I trust His Character.
Thank you, Josh. Amen! May we know the Voice of our Father, have the courage to wholeheartedly obey, and never, ever again heed the call of another. And may we know the joy of risking all to obey His Call when He says, "Come" -- yes, even when it looks impossible.

My greatest fear right now is making the right choice about going to counseling. I went through some terrible abuse as a child and because of it I have a cycle of having good then really terrible days. My fear is that if I go to counseling. Counseling will not work and I would have put all this hard work into it for nothing. I know counseling would put a strain on myself and my family. My other fear is I have no clue if it is God's will or not for me to go. Unfortunately my moods dictate whether I think God is saying yes or no about counseling.

I'm fixing to be working full time, Going to School, And Be the Head of a Large and Powerful Campus Ministry and I've been doing the Thinking or Planning for awhile. After reading this I realized I'm just Scared which is common but not from the Lord. This Spoke to me in a powerful way, not only to say "Forget the Fear" but also to not procrastinate to the Point of Missing What God has right in front of me not only in gifts but also in opportunities. Praise God For your Ministry. Have Great and Blessed Day
