Preaching Notes: Ray Ortlund, Jr.

The next preacher in I wanted to highlight in this series is Ray Ortlund, Jr. I have asked Justin Taylor to introduce him. Justin writes:
Raymond C. Ortlund Jr. is the pastor of Immanuel Church in Nashville. For nine years he was Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois before becoming a pastor. Dr. Ortlund is the author of a number of books, including A Passion for God: Prayers and Meditations on the Book of Romans; God's Unfaithful Wife: A Biblical Theology of Spiritual Adultery; and Isaiah: God Saves Sinners
in the Preach the Word commentary series. He also wrote the notes on Isaiah for the forthcoming ESV Study Bible.
Dr. Ortlund blogs at Christ Is Deeper Still, and you can also see his sermon transcripts online. His preaching models the mission statement for his church: "To experience and to spread felt union with Christ, glad love for one another and bold witness to our generation."
The below message was preached at Immanuel Church on February 10, 2008, from Matthew 5:8—"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

Pilgrim's Progress Musical: Pilgrim is a modern musical adaptation of John Bunyan's classic work, Pilgrim's Progress. It was performed in spring 2009 by the high school students at my church. They did a great job. The script is by theatre professionals (and members of our church) Janice Mays and Cathy Mays. The music is by various artists, including Bob Kauflin, Zach Jones and Mark Altrogge. You can order a DVD of the production here.
Give Me An Answer Highschool Conference: I'm looking forward to joining Al Mohler, Russell Moore, Shane & Shane and hip-hop artist Flame at the SBTS conference for highschool students next spring. Details.
Stephen Altrogge Reviews Dug Down Deep: Over at the Blazing Center blog they've posted a very generous review of the book. Read it.

Josh,
I absolutely love this sermon notes' series! It's interesting that you can see the different preaching styles of Mahaney and Ortlund just by looking at their notes. Their preparation really reflects their own personality. I honestly think seeing that reality in these men's sermon preparation will really help me in my own preparation! Thank you for doing this series!

I rarely comment on blogs - but I have to say that this series is brilliant - What a way to help us grow in preaching the word. I too would love to see one of yours!
Thanks again
