Facebook Again: A year ago I decided to ditch Facebook. But now I'm giving it another try. Why? Because I learned that by turning off all alerts I can better keep it under control. And also because I plan to collect ten million friends and then demand that they pray for me every day while I write my book (grin). Seriously, I hope to use Facebook as another way to connect with people about my new book and, Lord willing, the conference tour to support the book in 2010. Here's my Facebook page, please feel free to "friend" me.
I’m a follower of Jesus Christ. I live in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with an amazing wife and three wacky, fun kids. I'm a pastor at Covenant Life Church. I’m also a writer.
My friend Donald Miller shares a helpful tip for writers: get a kitchen timer. Don explains, "When I have two or three writing assignments I just make a list, then pick one, then set my little timer for an hour or twenty minutes or whatever amount of time that specific assignment will cost me. And then, while the timer is ticking away on my desk, I don't let myself do anything else....When the timer goes off, I decide whether I want to keep working on it, or move on. It's a simple tool, but it works." Read more.
Tim Challies asks whether he's ready to address his Google search history with God. "What would I say to him if he were to ask me about the things I have gone looking for online? Could I tell him with confidence that what I have sought is an indication of a heart that is aligned with his purposes? Or would I have to confess that my searches point to a heart that is drawn to what is evil and perverse?" Read the post.

But you didn't provide the facebook link so we can easily find you. There are several Josh Harris's in there ... including a fan club ...
Josh!
Isn't that interesting -- I just got a Facebook account again, too. I started it about two weeks ago. Before, to be honest, I couldn't get anybody to add me as their friend. I guess it didn't help that I was trying to get back in touch with people who thought I was a criminal. Anyway! I'm going about it all different now -- MY goal is to collect 200 friends with the last name "Harris." So far, I'm 1/100th of the way there. You help me reach my goal, and I'll help you out a little? See ya there! =)
For firefox users I recommend the add-on LeechBlock for self-imposing a limit on facebook use. The Boost add-on is also worth a look.
Facebook is a great way to connect and yes turn off all those e-mail alerts!!!
RATS!
I have been using YOUR WONDERFUL ARTICLE, MY ONE AN ONLY WEEK ON FACEBOOK, to give to my teens and all their friends and all the moms across america (!) who struggle with this LET"S LOOK AT OUR BELLY BUTTON FOR SEVERAL HOURS A DAY time waster!
Please don't cave in!
Can't you trust the Lord to take care of the sales of your book and keep yourself free from the FACEBOOK scene?!?
Please!?
For us Mothers and Fathers everywhere!?
Smile.
Of course, Romans 14...everyone must do what they believe is right, with faith, without doubting.
God bless you as you lead so many, both my your example and words....
In Christ
Mrs. C
welcome back. let me run to the facebook add you as a friend.
Welcome back! Just try not to get addicted. I find that I spend time on there when I am procrastinating from studying. :)
You'll need to add a profile photo of yourself so that when we do a search of the 500+ 'Josh Harris's in facebook land we can find you!
@Mrs. C - There's nothing wrong with Facebook as long as it's used in moderation. I find it an enjoyable diversion that I probably spend 10 minutes total a day using. I'm just a twenty something guy with no kids, but if I had them, I'd probably let them on facebook, but would set a time limit on it's use, and I would have them friend me so that I can see what exactly they're *doing* there.
