Biblical Truth for the Financial Crisis
Do not toil to acquire wealth;
be discerning enough to desist.
When your eyes light on it, it is gone,
for suddenly it sprouts wings,
flying like an eagle toward heaven.
Proverbs 23:4-5
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?"
Hebrews 13:5-6
Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
1 Timothy 6:6-10

Pilgrim's Progress Musical: Pilgrim is a modern musical adaptation of John Bunyan's classic work, Pilgrim's Progress. It was performed in spring 2009 by the high school students at my church. They did a great job. The script is by theatre professionals (and members of our church) Janice Mays and Cathy Mays. The music is by various artists, including Bob Kauflin, Zach Jones and Mark Altrogge. You can order a DVD of the production here.
Give Me An Answer Highschool Conference: I'm looking forward to joining Al Mohler, Russell Moore, Shane & Shane and hip-hop artist Flame at the SBTS conference for highschool students next spring. Details.
Stephen Altrogge Reviews Dug Down Deep: Over at the Blazing Center blog they've posted a very generous review of the book. Read it.

Those of us committed to historic orthodoxy often banter about how important Scripture is, theological musings, fights over how serious it all is. Simple use of Scripture, letting God do the talking in this case, is so powerful. Yes, his Word is sufficient for my life today!

"Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world."
We would be better off as a nation if we kept this, among many things, in mind.

Ahh.... how true. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm so grateful that we can place our trust in something so much more stable than a shaky economy. Fears for the future are unfounded when we anchor ourselves in the hope we have in Christ--the one who clothes the lilies of the field and sees each sparrow that falls.

Josh, thank you so much for those encouraging verses. During my devotional time this morning, I found a particular verse in Ecclesiastes 11 that totally blew me away. I was using my brand new ESV study bible too (of course). In this passage, it seems there is wisdom in financial diversification ("casting your bread upon many waters"). The verses here warn us about the unpredictability of the markets. God knows economics and finance better than Hank Paulson, Michael Bloomberg and Warren Buffet combined! Of course, this shouldn't take anyone by surprise.

Ah, thank you. A breath of truth from the Word for a weary saint.
