Holy Spirit Questionnaire

The subject line of this post ended up sounding kinda weird. Let me explain.

I'm working on a chapter for my new book on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. If you're willing to help me out, I'd be interested to get your answers to some or all of the following questions. I'm not interested in this becoming a debate, so please refrain from critiquing the comments left by other people or being snarky in your answers (I will delete any comments that violate this request).

If you can answer all the questions, that would be great. If you only feel like doing a few that's fine, but I would like to have everyone answer questions #8 and 10. And please number your answers or cut and paste the questions into your comment so I can easily see which question you're answering. Finally, by participating, you're giving permission for me to quote you in my book and use your photo on the book's cover (okay, the cover part is a joke). Thanks!

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

Comments (63)

1. Presbyterian Church in America

2. While I don't feel uninformed, I have done much less study of the Holy Spirit than other theological topics.

3. Church teaching, interactions with other Christians (especially missionaries)

4. Pentecost (Acts 2)

5. Continuationist with some qualifications. I'm wary of people who claim to have certain gifts.

6. While I have friends that differ widely, spiritual gifts are not nearly as much of an issue as other doctrines.

7. I do not believe I have gifts such as tongues and prophecy, but I do believe God has given me gifts like hospitality and teaching which I have used for his glory.

8. Primarily my conscience, warning against sin. My ongoing sanctification is only through the work of the Spirit.

9. I think it took the form of an increased awareness of God living in me as his temple. This caused me to be more careful about how I act.

10. I believe all Christians "have" the Spirit, but many times we see the Holy Spirit "come", move, and work in obvious, supernatural ways. How does this work in a Biblically informed view of the Spirit? Is it okay for some people I know to call upon the Spirit to come into a room of believers? I believe he is already there in the midst of them. I want to better understand the distinction between someone who has the Spirit as a result of a life justified by Christ and someone who is "filled with the Spirit" in what many could perceive as abnormal.

1. Many, I guess Assembly of God for last 4 years, raised Free Meth., going to a Non-Dom at college.

2.Informed, because I did theology and I have looked into it a lot.

3. Myself disagreeing with what I hear in this or that church, or discussion with this or that person, and going and researching it and finding my stance.

4. None.(And no, it's not just Pentecost because I'm Assembly of God :P)

5. Continuationist

6. It's a medium issue. I have friends with differing views. Most of my friends are continuationist, but we differ on views of how the Holy Spirit works today, and what tongues, prophecy, 'words of knowledge', look like.

7. Hard one. Not sure, I tend to walk in the gift of giving and maybe wisdom, but I think that the Holy Spirit himself being a gift He can manifest any of the gifts in any person, without restricting each person to one.

8. Sanctification. Opening my eyes/ears to the scripture each time I read. Interceding for me in prayer.

9. Not sure.

10. None.

1) Pentecostal (Foursquare)
2) Informed. I have read, studied, pray(ed) for and have helped others understand it
3) Probably book and personal study (churches dont focus enough on it).
4) Acts 2 and Mark 16:15-18
5) continuationist (I see it happen in todays world).
6) Think it can be a big issue
7) Healing, Evangelism, Teaching.
8) Understanding, compassion towards others (sickness, sin etc) and how to deal with my own issues
9) Enabled me to deal with issues (lust, rejection etc) and to become a mature Christian

1. leaning Reformed Baptist

2. Less informed. I think much of the church is heavily empirical, and issues such as the Holy Spirit tend to take a back seat.

3. Personal Bible study, college professors

4. Luke 21:15, Rom 8:26

5. Skeptical Continuationist - I believe God can bestow certain spiritual gifts if He so chooses, but that most of those claiming certain gifts today (prophecy for example) are doing so falsely.

6. Not a big issue. I'm sure my Christian friends disagree, but the subject doesn't tend to come up.

7. Discernment and Exhortation - to build up, challenge, and encourage fellow believers, ...and confront if necessary

8. My thirst for the things of God can only be explained by the Holy Spirit's work in transforming me

9. It makes it easier to witness to unbelievers when I can ask God to give me the words to speak. Additionally, I don't feel the pressure of that person's eternal destiny on me, knowing that the responsibility to *convince* them is not mine.

10. How are we to understand the Holy Spirit as a part of the Trinity? (For example, while it's fairly normal to pray to Jesus or God the Father, it seems odd somehow to pray to the Holy Spirit... although Romans 8:26 would seem to imply that the Holy Spirit is nevertheless a crucial participant in our prayer life.)

1.(Holiness) Pentecostal

3. My church's teaching

4. Probably Acts 2:17 ("And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams")

5. A continuationist

6. Mostly a non-issue since my circle is mainly in my church.

8. I cannot simply say giving me a conscience. But that is part of it. I think I would point to all the ways he is (constantly) changing me. It seems it's one thing after another, and each time I feel closer to Him.

10. I know you wanted people to fill out 8 and 10, but I'm sorry, I can't think of any questions I feel I need answering at the moment.

1. Non-denominational, baptistic, reformed

2. It's about on par with other areas of theology.

3. Study of the book of Acts has helped me better understand the role of the Spirit in manifesting mighty acts as the church continues the mission of Jesus.

4. 1 Cor. 2:12

5. I'm a cautious continuationist.

6. Among my church, we rejoice in continuing to learn more about how the Spirit transforms and empowers us.

7. Discernment, wisdom, exhortation. In the church to spur others on in the faith.

8. The Spirit gives me words to speak when I share my faith with unbelievers or those new in their faith.

9. It informs prayer, and makes me more attentive to the Spirit's empowering presence in sanctification and proclamation.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

1. Non-denominational evangelical in a Church of England Church
2. Uninformed, but fed up of stupid battles between charismatics and conservatives.
3. J.P. Moreland's earlier thought, Dallas Willard, Francis Schaeffer, Spurgeon, Kurt Koch, Norman Geisler, William Lane Craig
4. I try to avoid one verse or one passage theology. I think it's weak hermeneutics. I think Romans 12:1-2, Galatians 5 and Ephesians have most informed my discipleship understanding of the Holy Spirit. My rebirth understanding probably - John 3. And my general understanding - Jesus' general instructions about revealing the Father in the gospels.
5. I think that a large number of people who speak in tongues are fooling themselves. I believe in prophecy now, but I think a lot of it is bogus too. I think the argument about the canon closing is very weak. I reject most claims of physical healing because they are rarely substantiated. It concerns me greatly that talking about the Holy Spirit means talking about physical healing today. I think JP Moreland has really got that bit really wrong.
6. Yes, it's very touchy. Is the issue of spiritual gifts. Many Christian friends I know are naive about physical healing, tongues and prophecy. Once you see how much can be produced by the power of suggestion E.G. Derren Brown, and James Randi, it's hard to hold onto everything.
7. I'm a strong believer in Schaeffer's picture of substantial emotional and psychological healing in the power of the Holy Spirit. I'm quite open to words of knowledge too, pictures, but I think that they are often used to manipulate people.
8. Conviction of sin, offers of people to pray with me and for me, change of behaviour in people I pray for, and in myself. Seeing people come to faith.
9. I think reading Scheffer and Barrs made me more sensitive to the here and now of the Spirit.
10. Who is going to deal with the bogus/manipulative stuff properly? How can we hold our heads up and talk about the truth of the gospel when we use this stuff to manipulate each other all the time? How can I keep my mind/heart/feelings open to the holy Spirit during temptation? How can I experience / see more gospel centred prophecy and words of knowledge?

10. I would like to hear better articulation about some of the gifts that make people like me squeemish: prophesy, healing, tongues.

1. Presbyterian Church in America

2. Informed. I have spent a considerable amount of time studying the subject, both in Scripture and in theological works.

3. Personal Bible study. The majority of the teachers I've had in the two denominations I've grown up in (Southern Baptist and PCA) have tended to lean toward cessationism. My personal Bible study led me away from this, because I simply see no scriptural warrant for this position.

4. 1 Corinthians 12-14, especially chapter 12.

5. Continuationist

6. It tends to be a non-issue in most of my circles. I have close Christian friends who are on various points of the scale between cessationist and continuationist.

7. Teaching - It's what I love to do most. I have been teaching on a regular basis in the church since I was 17.

Leadership - Along with teaching, I have been able to lead ministries and people, particularly in youth, missions, and music.

Discernment - God has given me many opportunities to help people distinguish between truth and error, even in times when it seems like the line is unclear. In addition, I tend to be able to discern people very well, which has helped me in teaching and guiding others regarding what sort of company they should regularly keep.

Musical-artistic ability - Artistic ability is not typically cited, but I think Exodus 31 is pretty clear that God gifts some, by His Spirit, to do things with their hands, especially things which physically build up the church. I have been serving in the church with my musical gifts since I was 13.

8. The Spirit is especially at work in convicting me of sin, enlightening my understanding of Scripture, and in guiding me how to teach and guide the youth at my church.

9. Upon realizing that artistic abilities may be direct gifts of the Spirit, I gained a whole new vigor for using my gifts to serve the church. Before I knew this, serving in music was at times difficult, often because I got little thanks from people for doing so. Also, it has practically affected how I teach about the Spirit.

10. Should I at least pursue or pray for spiritual gifts which I have not experienced, particularly those which are generally cited as the "miraculous"? If so, how?

1. What church denomination do you belong to?
(METHODIST)

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?
(INFORMED - WE;RE BEING TAUGHT AT CELL, AT SERVICE, as well as conferences, etc...)

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)
(CHURCH'S TEACHING, PERSONAL DEVOTION, EXPERIENCING THE SPIRIT AT WORK, CHRISTIAN BOOKS ALL PLAY AN EQUAL ROLE)

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?
(JOHN 14 - John 16:15)

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?
(CONTINUATIONIST)

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?
(NOT A MAJOR ISSUE IN MY CHURCH. YES, I HAVE FRIENDS WHO USES LABELS and like to group christians in 2 categories - charismatic & not charismatic. I personally don't like to use those labels.)

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?
(Gift of shepherding, discernment, Speaking in tongues, prophecy, helps. These gifts are actively engaged when I lead small group, pray with others for healing/God's direction, etc....mentor others, offering help of all kinds to meet the needs of others.)

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?
(The holy spirit is transforming my character each day, giving me the grace to grow in patience, and to battle against my flesh each time it attempts to be complaining or frustrated when serving, and to assure me of GOd's love everyday, when I feel insecure in the midst of discouragement or failures.)

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?
[Understanding that the everyday living by the Spirit translates into real transformation in the being to be more christ-like, and not merely the manifestation of the (more spectacular) gifts of the spirits like tongues, miracle workings or prophecy.]

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?
Can't think of any burning questions.;)

1. Interning at a SGM church (Grace Church in Orlando FL)

2. Informed, but also duly uninformed. The Holy Spirit is the "shy" Person of the Godhead. He is intentionally mysterious. He is like the wind.

3. A mixture of personal Bible study, in conjunction with seminary education, church teachings, and various authors such as John Owen.

4. Romans 5:5 - God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

5. A continuationist, although unsure about how such gifts are to be exercised in the life of the church.

6. It's not a big issue. I do have friends I disagree with on the gifts, but we're in full agreement on the fruit of the Spirit. Plus, I think they practice the gifts without acknowledging them!

7. Unsure, although I do enjoy speaking encouraging words into others' lives. I guess you'd call that prophecy, although I'm not too comfortable about stepping up to the prophecy mic!

8. He is constantly applying the redemptive work of Christ in my life, in those around me, and in the world. He takes the treasures of redemption stored up in Christ and applies them to my mind and heart. He is at work in the life of my church and the universal Church, sending and leading us to fulfill God's mission for the world.

9. Scripture has taught me that the Christian life in its entirety is a work of the Spirit, of keeping in step with the Spirit through repentance and faith in Christ. Studying the person and work of the Holy Spirit has resulted in a more balanced understanding of sanctification, which has yielded much comfort in Christian growth and less dependence on the flesh in pursuing faithfulness to Christ.

10. What is the central work of the Holy Spirit, and how can this work be emphasized in the life of the Church in such a way that it yields humility in the non-essentials and unity in the essentials?

1. Non-Denominational, Dispensational, but leaning to Reformed.

2. Not as informed as I ought to be.

3. My understanding has come from Baptist churches, Bible teaching, and personal experience.

4. John 14:15-26; 15:26,27; 16:8-15

5. Not sure. I have been taught that the special gifts are no more. Yet the verses used to prove this are vague. On the other hand, I don't believe we should put God in a box. Therefore if He wants to use those special gifts today He can. Even still, what I have been taught and what I have experienced are not lining up.

6. I think it is a big deal to some. For the reasoning is that it undermines the authority of Scripture. Yes, I have friends that differ with me on this. Its just not discussed.

8. I know that the Spirit is at work in my life for I have a hunger for the Word and knowledge of God and I am learning to obey the Spirit's leading in my life.

9. I know it is the Lord that has led me to study more about Covenant theology. Coming from a Dispensational background, I have seen new things is Scripture that bring new life to my walk with God.

10. Well for starters, if the canon of Scripture is closed, what would be the purpose of the sign gifts? My understanding is that they were given by the Apostles and that they were a sign to the Jews (1 Cor. 1:22). Second if sign gifts are for today, how do you know you have them? I guess for that matter how do you know what your spiritual gifts are period? I know there is the 'spiritual gift test', but seriously it seems hokey. And if you have one of the special gifts, how do you know? There has been so much abuse concerning these gifts that in my circles, they don't believe in them or worse bad mouth those that do.

1. Non-denominational
2. Informed. I have done my own inductive study using Precepts materials. This was a number of years ago.
3. The Word of God - and my inductive study.
4. Hmm.. there are so many ... Ephesians 1:17-20. Romans 8. Galatians 5:16-25.
5. I believe that all the gifts are at work today, however I also believe that there is great misunderstanding of the gifts. For example, the gift of prophecy in the word of God is NOT the fortelling of future events --- that is soothsaying. There is much divination in some churches today, masquerading as "gifts of the Spirit". This I believe is a deception and sin.
6. It does not happen to be a big issue among my current circle of believers. But it is a question that occassionally comes up in my bible studies.
7. I tend to believe my gifts are more identifiable to the recipients of the gifts....
8. Oh, He is my wonderful, constant companion!!! Whether He convicts me of sin, nudges me to walk in His ways, or simply assures me of His love and presence, He is an ever-present help!!!
9. Stop focusing on myself and just stay close to the Lord and walk in His ways!!! By this the Holy Spirit works in ways I do not have to see but trust! For example, if I am obeying by being patient or kind, it is love - His fruit - but I don't have to analyze it like it's my work. Let others be the recipients and see Him and not me! In other words, walk in the Spirit and get out of His way!
10 Is the role of the Holy Spirit the same in heaven/eternity as it is here and now?

1. NON-DENOMINATIONAL EVANGELICAL

2. INFORMED, because I have encountered a great deal of teaching on the role of the holy spirit

3. teaching in church

4. John 16:7-15

5. continuationist - but I believe that they are definitely not as prominent

6. It's not a big issue or a non-issue, it is a small issue. I do have friends who disagree with me on this.

7. I believe that I have the gift of exhortation and teaching (though some do not consider these to be among the "charismatic gifts"). I use them in my (secular) job as a professor and also just in my daily interactions with friends/family.

8. Nothing dramatic - just an increasing desire to do what's right, greater discomfort when I do something wrong.

9. I don't know if I can pinpoint a concrete "practical" effect

10. How do you grow in certainty of the Holy Spirit's leading/prompting?

1. Sovereign Grace Ministries (Surrey, BC)

2. Somewhat informed....I have do some study but not near to the degree that I would like to

3. When I first became a Christian someone gave me a video that acted out the Book of Acts (I must have watched it 10-15 times) Also, books by Jack Deere.

4. The temple being torn and the subsequent filling of the Spirit at Pentecost

5. I am a cautious continuationist (or as Mark Driscoll puts it - a charismatic with a seat belt)

6. Although I have many friends that would put themselves somewhere along the continuationist/cessasionist spectrum this topic does not seem to be as "hot" as it once was. This controversy seemed to reach its height in our part of the country during the Toronto outpouring and has been recently revived with the popularity of Todd Bently (as he is from here) but it doesn't seem to be a big deal right now.

7. I think God has given me the gifts of teaching and encouragement and I seek to use these I varying ways in my local church.

8. The Holy Spirit is currently working to help me to love my wife more and to be more compassionate with those who do not see things the way I do.

9. Understanding that the Holy Spirit was a person and not just a ghost was encouraging - adding my understanding of God in community

10. Is it "proper" to pray to the Spirit? Minor question but one that's always been in the back of my mind.

1. What church denomination do you belong to?
Attend Free Methodist church, theological leanings a little more reformed

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?
While growing up in the church and attending Christian schools has given me a strong and solid foundation, I haven't done the in-depth study I would feel necessary to warrant claiming myself as "informed."

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)
teaching in the church

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?
While I do not believe I have personally witnessed the gifts of the Spirit, I believe the Spirit can still work in that way. It seems that in contemporary America we don't expect to see supernatural or miraculous things, and so we don't. God can, does, and will work in mysterious and wonderful ways. Whether these ways include the gifts of the Spirit, I couldn't say.

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?
While it is occasionally mentioned, it is not usually a prominent issue. I am not aware of close friends who differ on the issue, although a year or two ago I had the experience of a friend praying in what she called a "prayer language." None of the others of us present understood what she said, so I hesitate to call it speaking in tongues. I don't doubt her faith, but the experience certainly raised questions about the manifestations of the Spirit and discernment.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?
The fact that, in spite of my best efforts, I am still growing in faith and love toward Christ. Discipline to have daily devotions is continually a struggle for me, and yet I find that when I do sit down and read the Word of God, I am blessed by it.
Although my faults are many and I find myself confessing the same sin time and again, when I look at a longer period of time than a month or two, I can see changes in my behavior or outlook.
I see the Holy Spirit working in my life in the very fact that I am convicted by sin and that I am able (solely by the grace of God) to change and be sanctified.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?
Don't know that I have any pressing questions currently...

1.What church denomination do you belong to? Non-Denominational/Doctrines of Grace
2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit?

Informed - Why is that? Because His power and presence is throughout the OT/NT. And the preachers/teachers of our church make sure not to minimize the Spirit's power in the believer (which is not highlighted in a lot of cessasionist churches).

Uninformed - Why is that? Because He is mysterious and humble in His position throughout Scripture. And there are many brothers that I highly esteem who are continuationist (John Piper).

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person) My church's teaching. Boice's - Foundations of the Christian Faith

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life? John 16:13-15 - The Holy Spirit will glorify the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. This shows the role of submission the Spirit has in the ministry of the gospel which is to exalt Christ. This has helped me serve in ministry ...especially when I must submit to the leaders in our ministry, so that Christ may be exalted (no longer the preacher/leader).

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)? Cessasionist.

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?
It's an issue - that requires humble discernment. Maybe this is a lesson we can learn from the Spirit... I don't have a lot of Christian friends who differ from me. I wish I did - in order to open me to the Word more clearly.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God? NA

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

Holiness - Romans 1:9 -17

Humility - John 16:13-15

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

There is a lot to learn about the God I worship - in His three persons. I shouldn't neglect or minimize the Spirit's role in my life because I believe that relevatory gifts have ceased.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit? What main verses do continuationists use to explain that the gifts function in the present day?

1. Church of England

2. Informed

3. My friend Simon Ponsonby has written the best book I know on the Holy Spirit called 'God inside out'. It is my go-to reference on the subject (with Fee) and you really should try to get hold of a copy. Also, if you want someone to get in touch with to discuss thoughts I am sure he would be game. (Pastor of Theology, St Aldates, Oxford.) The other person you might find helpful is the writing of Tom Smail.

http://www.amazon.com/God-Inside-Out-Simon-Ponsonby/dp/1842913441/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234858598&sr=1-2

4. My thoughts on this have changed. I think Packer in Knowing God has shown me the Spirit as making known my sonship-which I knew but has become more real. Happened recently so still processing my thoughts.

5. I believe the gifts are for today.

6. It is quite a big issue. I have friends who are not Charismatic but we have managed this far not to fall out because I speak in tongues! It saddens me when we let this divide us.

7. My prayer language has been a mighty blessing and gift.

8. In my prayer life. In my preaching. In opening up truth. In assurance. In fruit particularly joy.

9.Reading Romans for a month solid changed my life. I used to work for a tobacco company now I am a preacher and a pastor. I think that might be the Spirit!

10. I have in the last couple of years been thinking about hearing God's voice. Still thought in progress.

Bless you Josh and hope it goes well. I you need anything just get in touch.

David

1. non-denominational church

2. compared to other theological topics - uninformed

3. There are two. One is a discipleship training I was apart of in college and the second was a booklet that my current pastor had created for the church members. The discipleship training was done in a Christian club that I was apart of my university and leader who trained us has had a big influence on my understanding of the Holy Spirit.

4. Several come to mind...The verse where Jesus says that it is better for him to go so that the Holy Spirit can come and the verse that says that the Spirit is a counsellor.

5. continuationist

6. I don't think it is a big issue and my circle of friends don't really discuss this issue very much.

7. Administration, encouragement, and discernment are my spiritual gifts. Administration and discernment have indirectly served others - being organised with my responsibilities and discerning my path. Encouragement has directly served my family and friends - especially in times of difficulties. I have helped my family and friends to see what's really important, feel better about themselves or the situation, and I've helped them direct their eyes toward God.

8. Every time I remember God or every time I am aware of God's work in me, I believe that it is the work of the Spirit that helps me to remember or think of God. So I believe the Spirit works in me daily.

9. For the aforementioned discipleship training, I had to memorize the verse about the Spirit interceding for us with groans that words cannot express. When I'm frustrated about prayer and am unsure about what I should pray for, especially in times of crisis or difficulty, this verse gives me confidence and assurance that God will hear my needs regardless of my frustration or confusion.

10. Now that I've completed this survey, I would like to revisit my beliefs about the Spirit against what the Bible says. I've never questioned what I believed about the Spirit because it's what I've been told and it made sense to me. But I've never really dug in depth about it on my own. So, I'd like to know of practical and real evidence of the gifts of the Spirit working in people's lives. I'd like to know if it is correct for me to believe that "God reminders" that I receive in my daily life, and my understanding of Scripture are the work of the Spirit.

1. Attend Covenant Life Church, so nondenominational.

2. Similarly informed as other areas, through personal reading and listening to sermons/lectures.

3. D.A. Carson, Showing the Spirit; Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology; personal study of Scripture.

4. 1 Cor. 12-14.

5. Continuationist, as long as the gifts are practiced in submission to Scripture.

6. Non-issue because I'm a CLC member. Most of my non-CLC Christian friends are noncharismatic in practice, but this has not been a decisive issue.

7. Encouragement, discernment, teaching, wisdom in leading my family and counseling others. In process of evaluating possible prophecy gifting.

8. An increasing awareness of my indwelling sin and need for the cross.

9. Mortification of sin. Awareness of God's personal presence and ministry in my life.

10. How does one evaluate for the presence of spiritual gifts, especially the more subjective sign gifts? If we are to "earnestly desire the spiritual gifts" (1 Cor. 14:1), should we ask for them in prayer, and if so, how?

One more question for my entry in #10 above:

During worship services, some churches (including my own) sometimes ask congregation members to individually but simultaneously sing aloud whatever words and melodies God gives them. However, in 1 Cor. 14:26, Paul writes, "When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation" (emphasis added). He then suggests that only one person do this at a time, "for God is not a God of confusion but of peace" (1 Cor. 14:33).

Does the practice of individual simultaneous spontaneous songs during corporate worship violate Paul's admonitions for orderly worship in 1 Cor. 14:26-40?

1. Baptistic. Non-Denominational.

2. Less informed, but improving. Over-reacting to perceived non-biblical emphasis, many in my tradition are a bit frightened by the thought of the Holy Spirit. Thus we do not really strive to understand Him.

3. Personal Bible Study. Some interaction with Dr. James Grier.

4. John 14-17.

5. An open-handed cessationist. (This is not a doctrine I hold with a tight-fist, but it is where I am)

6. Within my church family it would be a "big" issue to some, but not to our leadership. Within my own circles, it's not a divisive issue at all (I have many friends who differ from me).

7. --

8. As I spend increased time in the Word and in Christian Community, the Spirit illuminates areas of my life which need to be formed to the image of Christ. If I am open to His work in my life, he brings my actions into correspondence with the person I've been newly created to be.

9. I've gained a new understanding that the Spirit is the active force, and I need to be willing to be acted upon. I am not the actor.

10. Currently, I am working to gain a better understanding of the Holy Spirit's role in prayer.

1. Independent Evangelical in the UK.

2. Yes - place where there's lots of difference in my Church and among my friends. Church has changed lots in the 5 years I've been there and one of the main changes is much more acknowledgement of the 3rd person of the Trinity. Also the Charismatic-Conservative wall is collapsing in UK Evangelical circles, with lines being drawn on primary issues taking precedence.

3. A mixture - Church teaching, friends' use of the more Charismatic gifts, personal Bible study.

4. Romans 8:9-16 Regeration, Sanctification, Adoption by the Spirit.

5. Middle ground - the gifts have changed since the canon closed. They have different functions, and the revelatory nature has decreased - they only have specific revelation, and apply God's word rather than give anything not covered by it.

6. It can be if you tread on others toes on the issue. For instance tongues is a point you don't want to upset me by - you should be desiring the gift of interpretation and also not pray out loud in them over someone praying in English, so that all I hear is noise. It's not edifying (1 Cor 14). Likewise if people feel that they aren't being allowed to use "revelatory" gifts then they often get annoyed.

Yes, lots, including the other two in my prayer triplet.

7. I have teaching, knowledge, helps and embryonic giving (not really practised by a lack of money), but I'm not a continualist, so should I be answering? Is the question just talking about the "revelatory" gifts?

Teaching in leading bible studies and general chatting to people, helps in general serving the church, knowledge in Bible studies.

8. Sanctification is the main way I'd point people. Access to God, Sanctification, assurance (we're sealed with the Spirit) are ways I see it. God speaking to me through his word is another.

9. Exercise my gifts, spot them in others, desire other gifts (but not covet), try not to grieve the Spirit, or quench it but walk in it.

10. Why do some people seem to make such a big deal out of a handful of the gifts - ie the "revelatory gifts", especially tongues?

What is so great about tongues if you cannot interpret - I have friends who love it but don't care to know what they are saying?

Why does "angelic"/prayer tongues have different vocabulary, syntax and so on for people with different first languages - surely angels didn't have a Babel moment?

1. Reformed Baptist

2. Relatively informed, but don't have all the answers. I've taught a number of times at our church on the topic. I grew up in a Pentecostal/Charismatic context and really wanted to figure out what the Bible taught on sign gifts, etc. This led me to a good deal of personal study and reading.

3. Coming to Calvinistic convictions and understanding the role of the Holy Spirit in regeneration and sanctification. This opened all sorts of new windows for me. Also Sinclair Ferguson's books "The Holy Spirit" (which was the linchpin in making me a cessationist; published by IVP) and "Children of the Living God" (which was amazing in explaining the Spirit's role in my adoption and sanctification; published by Banner of Truth). Also Kenneth Berding's work on what spiritual gifts really are (see "What are Spiritual Gifts" published by Kregel) was pretty huge. Dr. Berding contends that we've misunderstood what spiritual gifts are (made a number of unwarranted assumptions and category mistakes) and this is what has led to much of the disagreement and controversy between cessationists and continuists. You should really grapple with his stuff if you're going to write a book on the gifts of the Spirit.

4. Romans 8 and/or 2 Corinthians 4.

5. I am a convinced cessationist but kind toward those who see things differently.

6. It's a rather significant issue in our church because our area of the country has a good deal of "Oneness Pentecostals" (who we don't recognize as orthodox). I've got buddies from my Pentecostal days who I happily consider brothers. I have enormous respect for John Piper, CJ Mahaney, and Joshua Harris (who I quoted in last Sunday's sermon). I can (and have) attend Sovereign Grace Churches and gladly worship alongside them.

7. N/A (and not New AttitudeÔÅä). As a cessationist, I believe that certain gifts are still given (the non-verifying ones). I believe I have the gifts of teaching/preaching/pastoring, leadership, and marriage.

8. The Holy Spirit is the only reason why I am a Christian today and the only reason why I have any spiritual affections for the Lord at all. I attribute any desire to grow, read the Bible, love my wife, repent of sin, conviction of sin, illumination of difficult passages of Scripture, desire to evangelize, et al., as the Spirit's active work in my life. My desire to cry out "Abba, Father" in prayer is the Spirit testifying with my spirit that I'm God's child. Also it's the Spirit who keeps me persevering when I'd sometimes rather go apostate.

9. Greater awareness of God's work in my life, greater assurance of salvation (which produced greater joy and confidence), greater happiness in God and love for God, greater appreciation for what the Lord has done in my life, greater awareness that I'm kept in the faith only by the grace of the Spirit.

10. Cf. question 3, have we totally misunderstood the category of spiritual gifts and assumed an understanding that scripture doesn't provide? This seems to be a matter of enormous practical significance to this debate. Also, how do I discern the leading of the Spirit from leadings of my own heart?

1. Presbyterian Church in America
2. I consider myself informed about the study/doctrine of the Holy Spirit, but not as knowledgeable with respect to other areas of study. I studied theology in depth in college and teach theology at the high school level in a Christian school now. I believe that many misunderstand who the Holy Spirit is and what he does - this has led authors to avoid commenting on him.
3. A lot of my thoughts on the Holy Spirit are shaped by DA Carson (Showing the Spirit), Wayne Grudem, and Richard Gaffin.
4. Acts 2 and 1 Cor. 13
5. I have yet to make up my mind. I believe the canon is shut; the prophecy spoken about in 1 Cor. is not the same in Acts or the Prophets of the OT ("Thus says the Lord.") Looking at the early church's critique of the Montanist movement, I agree with their reply - that these gifts are exceptions and not the rule.
6. No it is not. I believe baptism to be more important and encourage my friends who are getting married to figure that one out first. I have many friends on both sides of the aisle.
7. Teaching and Mercy
8. Conviction of sin and growing awareness that I am a great sinner who has a great savior.
9. More Prayer.
10. How can I know Him more intimately? How do the Father and the Son glorify and reveal the Holy Spirit?

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

Reformed Church of America

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

Somewhat informed - personal study and interest (Still in process of studying)

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

Personal study, John MacArthur, his book Charismatic Chaos, grew up in an environment where spiritual gifts weren't so emphasized, etc

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

Galatians 5:22-23

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?

Cessationist

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?

I do have friends that differ but it is not a big issue.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?

I am not a continuationist

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

The joy of knowing Christ, whenever I act in obedience to the Word, when I produce fruit, when I am able to witness for Christ

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word, what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

In the past, I did not have much of a position regarding the continuation of gifts. However, through study I have been convinced that they have ceased.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

Sorry, I REALLY can't think of any right now. Good luck with your book!

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

Reformed Church of America

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

Sorry, I REALLY can't think of any right now. Good luck with your book!

1. What church denomination do you belong to? No denomination although the assisting body is Sovereign Grace Ministries

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that? Relatively informed. I received 43 years of cessationist teaching and 1 year of solid study looking at both arguments.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)Personal Bible study.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life? All of scripture viewed systematically...not any one verse or passage.

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)? I do not believe I have the gift of tongues, prophesy or healing and I have never seen evidence of anyone else having those gifts but I believe God is able to impart those gifts on his people today if he so desires. Logically I can follow the cessationist argument but the verses typically used to back up the argument dont hold water for me...so I am neither one.

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue? it is a big issue as far as what church people join but not as far as fellowship is concerned. I have many friends on both sides of the aisle.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God? God has given me a desire to help people through giving, encouragement and service with giving as the most desireable.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to? Illumination of scripture, comfort, and manipulating my desires such that the Gal 5 fruit of the HS is evidenced.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life? I have always viewed God as my Father and Jesus as my Savior and joint heir with me. Through specific personal study of scripture my eyes have been opened to the everyday effect and benefit of the Holy Spirit which has deepened my relationship with God.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit? Understanding the "filling" of the Holy Spirit. Is it something that we do or something that God does to us? Are we "filled" at salvation/conversion or just "indwelled"? Do we get emptied completely of the Holy Spirit or just partially? Does the Holy Spirit speak to us directly only through the written Word of God or through a variety of means? I have heard all the arguments and non seem difinitive to me. Can it be that it is one of the many "mysteries"?

Josh,

I was wondering if I could put these 10 questions on my blog, evangelicalvillage.com? I will link it back to your page... It is a great questionnaire and I am very curious to see what our wide range of readers believe?

I am looking forward to your new book!

Josh,

I was wondering if I could put these 10 questions on my blog, evangelicalvillage.com? I will link it back to your page... It is a great questionnaire and I am very curious to see what our wide range of readers believe?

I am looking forward to your new book!

1. Reformed Continuationist (I attend an SGM church)

2. Fairly informed I think

3. personal Bible study

4. I was raised cessasionist but had done very little personal study on the subject of the Holy Spirit. In college I had a friend challenge me to read the book of Acts and highlight every time the Holy Spirit was mentioned. God opened my eyes to things I had never noticed when I read it this way. Reading about the numerous times that people were filled with the Holy Spirit was helpful in changing my theology and my perspective about the subject.

5. continuationist

6. This is a very big issue around me. I live in an area with a lot of fundemental Baptists and similar and I grew up in that world. Changing my view about the gifts of the Spirit was a big deal for me. I was going against something that I was strongly taught as a kid and against pastors and teachers that I greatly respect. I still have friends who I love and respect that would disagree with me about this.

7. God has given me the gift of praying in tongues (privately). This has been an encouragement to my soul numerous times. I also believe that I have been given the gift of administration, which I have been privileged to use as I serve my church. I am basically the administrative assistant for our children's ministry and this has blessed me and been a help to our church as we seek to teach the gospel to the next generation. I also believe God has given me the gift of encouragement, which in many cases has allowed me to help my friends who are downhearted or going through trials.

8. God has been working in me through various trials, growing my faith in Him. He is, I believe, tuning the strings of my heart (to quote the old hymn) so that I will be able to trust Him in any situation I may find myself.

9. As I said above, studying the Holy Spirit completely changed my theology and the way that I went about my life. It made me much more in tune with God's leading and direction in my life.

1. What church denomination do you belong to? Bapstist

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?
Informed, first of all because I am sealed with Him, so he teaches me about Himself. I also have gracefully being able to attend a very good church where they have thought me about what the Bible says about the holy Spirit.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

Personal Bible Study and a message CJ preached at Cov life when I went to visit there. He preached form 1 Cor 2: 6....

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life? Ephesians 1:13

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?
cessasionist

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?

big issue, and yes I do and I love and respect them!

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?
I am a cessasionist

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

He convinces me of my sins, encourages me through the Word, he teaches me and He helps me to overcome temptation.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

- Non-Denom (Bible Church)

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

--- I'd say, somewhat informed. I have read some about the HS, and have grown to cherish and love him more and more.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

--- Three things. Martyn Lloyd Jones book: Preaching and Preachers, convicted me so much about the role and power of the Holy Spirit in ministry. Then I was reading in 1 Samuel with the HS coming up Saul and David, causing great things. Then I read the same day in Acts, where the HS shows up everywhere and cool things happen. John Owen's, The Mortification of Sin in Believers, was a seminal book in my life, and the realization of my dependency on the HS.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

--- Romans 8 has been a great help to me!! The Spirit serves and aids us in just about everything we need!! From killing sin to praying, the Holy Spirit is our help!

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?

--- I grew up cessasionist, the church I was raised in was pretty hardcored about it. If you spoke in tongues, you may not be a Christian. Little crazy. I am somewhere in the middle. God can use and make available in the gifts whatever He wants (Ps. 115:3). I am not a full cessasionist, because everything is going to get all pentecostal in the end times. : )

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?

--- I do have friends who differ on this issue, but we do not fight about it. As it is not a Gospel issue, it is not worth breaking fellowship over.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

--- Undoubtedly the HS convicts me of sin. I ask for the HS to move powerfully in my preaching. Spurgeon would repeat to himself as he was walking up to preach, "I believe in the Holy Spirit, I believe in the Holy Spirit." I ask for Him to fly behind my words and cause a great impact for the Son. He has done great work. The HS also places people on my heart and mind to pray for.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

--- It has changed my prayers immensely. He is the source of my strength and success in all realms. Romans 8:13 is clear, that it is only by the Spirit that we put to death the deeds of the body so we can have life and peace(v.6).

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

How do we differentiate between my heart and the leading of the Spirit?

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

Southern Baptist Convention

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

Informed. I got wrapped up in a very charismatic group in high school, felt some things weren't right and decided to study the topic extensively.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

Personal Bible study, great discussions with people smarter than I.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

John 16: 4-11-
Honorable mentions:
Romans 8, Ephesians 1:13

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?

Continuationist

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?

Pretty big issue... Yes, many of my friends are cessationists.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?

Leadership and Teaching are my spiritual gifts. God has used these gifts in my life by giving me opportunities to serve and preach in the local church.

(this is an odd question to me because a cessationist also believes a majority of the spiritual gifts are still at work today)

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

I would point them to my calling in general. Right now the Holy Spirit is really directing me and helping me see his direction for my life. Specifically about church planting and the location that might be.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

It had a major effect on my prayer life. When I left the overly charismatic group I began to pray biblically. Also, it has helped me in my daily dependence upon the Holy Spirit. Finally, it has helped my study of Scripture as I pray that he illuminates the Scripture that I might understand and be transformed.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

If speaking in tongues is a 'private prayer language' why do we not see that in the book of Acts? Why is tongues only used as other foreign languages?

1. Independent Charismatic

2. Informed. There is a clear emphasis on the power and necessity of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit are practised.

3. Probably personal Bible study though the church's teaching is not far behind.

4. Galatians 5:16 ...live by the Spirit...

5. a continuationist

6. In my Bible college (Reformed), I'd say it is a big issue for me and other charismatics. Many Christian friends (especially in college) would be cessasionist.

7. I have the gift of tongues, encouragement and (I think) prophecy. Speaking in tongues has been followed with a clear interpretation to another believer and has often aided my personal devotions (leading me to issues for prayer). Prophesy has brought words (usually from Scripture) to people I've prayed for: encouraging them or challenging them (sometimes in areas I had no idea of).

8. The Holy Spirit is definitely purifying my actions and thoughts, enabling me to fix a more constant gaze on Jesus. He also reveals things in the Word when I am praying privately (e.g. for a friend).

9. The passage from Romans on the Spirit of sonship, and the inward groaning has strengthened my prayer life putting a deeper compassion in my soul.

10. I still have confusion over gifts such as tongues, healing (most of the ones mentioned in Corinthians). I believe that his presence or at least the effect of it should be very tangible but I haven't experienced this consistently. I think also the role of faith has left me with doubts, since for some it seems to leave the ball in my side of the court.

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

None.

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

Informed. Objectively, my knowledge of Scripture and studies in theology warrants sufficient reason for me to believe that I'm informed of His presence and reality. Subjectively, my experience of His inspiration, conviction of sin, and Christ-like qualities that gradually are manifest in my life, as well as the lives of others, leaves little doubt that He has informed me of his presence.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

First, personal study of Scripture but a close second is the certain fruit of others' lives.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

John 16:7-11

Not a big issue. Yes; have many friends with a variety of differing beliefs.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?

Teaching and service. Led multiple small groups; teaching academically and within churches in a variety of formats; Service in ministry to the poor; helping neighbors before they ask.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

Working within my heart to make me more like Christ in patience with others.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

Understanding the personal qualities of God's Spirit from the Word has resulted in a personal approach to Him in my life. I speak with him, feel him, miss him when I've moved away, etc.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

Is is ever wrong to pray to God's Spirit?

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

non-denom

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

informed, lots of study in personal time and seminary

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

Deere and Edgar's books, Calvin and Luther's positions, scripture itself primarily.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

1 Cor 13:8 just seems pretty clear to me to represent a cessationist position.

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?

I consider myself a cessationist in the vein of John MacArthur in that i would not deny the possibility for the miraculous...which(just to be clear) isn't a gift at that point.

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?

Not a big deal with friends. It is a big deal in the church I'm serving. The previous pastor, "insisted" the church embrace speaking in tongues and claimed the church wouold die if it didn't.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

Any ability to resist sin. Any ability to pursue holiness. Any ability to understand scripture are all evidences of the holy spirit working in my life.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

Any knowledge or understanding I have about anything of God is significantly because of God's word.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

Why fight about it? Why would we need the more charismatic gifts when it seems the scriptures are sufficient to preach, correct and provide the truth. They just seem to divide the church more than unite. They seem to ruin the most holy of moments by someone who feels obliged to spout off giberish when everyone in the room speaks English...just kills the mood, because it draws attention to the person instead of God himself. Why do it if everyone speaks the same language? Isn't the phenomena of speaking in tongues not unique to Christianity...if it's not exclusively Christ like, then why do it? Do we have any evidence of Jesus speaking in tongues? None.

And as others have noted well...who's going to discipline and correct the abuses of those who think they have this gift and abuse their "gift"?

1. Baptist

2. I consider myself informed. It's hard to separate the Spirit from the Godhead. The three are one. You can read the New Testament and see references to him everywhere, and taking that knowledge you see him referenced in the Old Testament too. The Holy Spirit is entwined in all other theological topics.

3. Personal Bible study.

4. Especially I Cor 12:4-11, but of course there's so much more.

5. a continuationist. However, I don't think that everyone necessarily has any gift all the time. The Spirit gives for the purposes he needs accomplished.

6. It's a non-issue in my circle. I have friends of differing beliefs on the function of the Spirit. We don't believe that it is a matter to split fellowship over.

7. I've been told that I have the gift of faith, discernment and healing. When speaking to people on varying topics, I've seen how my faith and trust has encouraged others to stay on-track and to not waiver from what they know to be true. After having been asked for advice or just my opinion, people have returned to say how they should have listened or how they are glad they listened; I've noticed this only happens when I prayerfully open my mouth and not just speak to hear my own voice. I often give massages to my close friends and the number one thing I hear is, "How did you know that I was hurting there?" and I can't explain it, but they are revitalized.

8. I am continuously reminded of his finished work to save my soul from hell. He is relentless in his work to reveal my hidden faults and correct them; sometime I'm slow-going, but he is always persistent and merciful. I can see how he is showing me how I should love. By showing me love, and showing me how I need to be more loving, I feel him continuously and persistently remaking me in the image of the father.

9. The studying of the Spirit has made me more loving and forgiving and gracious to others. I think I more closely resemble John13:35 from his work. The spirit has made me more like the father.

10. I don't know what question I should ask.

1. Roman Catholic

2. Yes, since childhood I am already aware of the Holy Spirit, since my education is in Catholic Schools. Though these are mostly in Theory, I was "truly" aware of the Holy Spirit and how He works in my life when I joined a Catholic Christian Community.

3. In theory, the Schools that I attended to. In practice, the Catholic Christian Community I've joined in also in reading the Bible and listening to Lord in daily prayer time.

4. Phils 4:13 "I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me"

5. Continuationist

6. Non-issue. I'm blessed since my current circle of friends are aware of my faith and my community.

7. Gift of Wisdom, and Gift of Healing and Gift of Tongues. (Though at times I believe the Lord gives us specific gifts during in time of need. Say when giving a talk or leading worship). I've used these gifts in service. Serving in my Christian Community.

8. Everything. I believe that since when I dedicated my life in service to the Lord, the Holy Spirit has been guiding me, refining me, healing and empowering me to do the things that I am doing now.

9. Hope, Freedom and Peace of Mind. I believe that if not for the Holy Spirit's guidance, I would be a most pessimist and worrier person. I would always be bonded by my sins and would always worry about everything. Through the Spirit's guidance, I am made aware that life is beautiful, though it has many problems, trials and sufferings the Lord is always at my side to help and carry me.

10. None. Praise God.

1. Mennonite

2. Fairly informed, because of personal study, and bc I have been around many of different kinds of churches who have a lot of different perspectives.

3. That's a hard one. Probably doing short term missions several years back, when I was exposed to the pentecostal and charismatic movements. I didn't buy into everything, but it started a lot of personal processing.

4. Another hard one! I'd say John 16:13 where Jesus promises the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth.

5. continualist

6. It's an issue, but not one of the biggest. I have had good Christian friends across the spectrum.

7. Teaching, creativity (if that counts), possibly prophecy. I would hope God has used me to help Christians take ownership of their beliefs and act on them.

8. The Holy Spirit is trying to get me to listen to His leading more than my own human reasoning, from the big issues to the seemingly mundane things.

9. The verse I cited above speaks to me that it is God's presence in us through the Spirt that enables us to know truth beyond all doubt.

10. Why does God appear to do more miracles and manifest Himself in supernatural ways more for some people and in some places than others?

1) Baptist Church (myself is more on Reformed faith)

2) Informed. I've read books and "google" topics on the Holy Spirit in different perspectives and denominations.

3) Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem.

4) Galatians 5:22-23

5)Continuationist. I agree with what Pastor Mark Driscoll said Charismatic with seat belt. :) However, I am a little uncomfortable with people telling me that they received gifts like tongues, prophecy and some strange revelation from God, especially Christian from the charismatic churches.

6) I've issue with my Christian friends from charismatic church trying to debate with me about the 2nd Baptism in the Holy Spirit, is mean to speak in tongues. I also have problem rejecting charismatic Christian friends zealously inviting me to some "extreme" charismatic conference, which makes them think that I'm a heart hardened, narrow minded Christian.

7) I believe God has given me gifts like teaching and wisdom, where I can serve my church by teaching Sunday school and answering theological questions.

8) Holy Spirit helps me to be more aware of my sins and He is shaping my character, my values and bare fruit for God.

9) The more I learned about the sovereign of God and how He has love me and die for my sins,
I'm begun to be more willingly obey His commandments and teachings, more aware of how to making right choice and decision in my living and also live my life to please Him. God is sanctifying me through His work of Holy Spirit and His words.

10. I wonder is that possible if spiritual gifts can be given to non-believer, in order to attain God's purpose for believers and church?

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

A. Seventh-Day Non-Denominational

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

B. No/Yes. Most folks don't want to talk about it.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

C. Pator Doug Batchelor ,( Amazing Facts Ministries), my Dad, and personal study. http://www.amazingfacts.org/Television/CentralStudyHour/tabid/76/ctl/PlayMedia/mid/407/MDID/776/PID/279/SID/1/SQT/1000/7/Gifts-of-the-Holy-Spirit/Default.aspx A very helpful sermon to me.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

D. Matthew 17:20,...ect.

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?

E. continuationist. If Jesus and the Apostles did or had it, we can too. John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?

F. 1. No, not as big an issue as it used to be. I don't think people want to think about it or understand it. :( 2. Some of them believe in gifts (small ones).

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?

G. Not sure which passage you are going by: I need to study this more :) I love to encourage and I have faith that anything is possible if only we ask, I thank God for the wisdom and knowledge of His Word that He has given me, and I hope to help others understand His plan of salvation and help them to prepare for His glorious coming.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

H. I have asked God (since I was little) to let His Light shine through me as a sunbeam for others to see. I think that He is performing this good work in my life. I praise God when near strangers have told me that they saw Jesus in me and that they were encouraged in there walk with God because of me! ect.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

I. Like, wow! I can really pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit to work in me for others, and that He will comfort me in times of need and lead me in everything I am supposed to do , and through Christ and the Holy Spirit others can see the hand of their Creator!

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

J. I would like someone (won't mention any names lol) to explain the gifts in more detail, and how we can use our gift or gifts better for His glory.

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

It depends = maybe Reformed Bapticostal. Currently Southern Baptist.

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

Informed. As a new Christian I was primarily involved in Charismatic churches and house churches and later interned in a church heavily influenced by the Vineyard movement. I study the Bible. I study theology. Also, I have recently graduated from seminary, where (of course) it often came up.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

Golly - all of the above. Though I am far less "Charismatic" than I once was, my early experiences and fellowship influenced me greatly I'm sure. I was originally heavily influenced by Jack Deere's, "Surprised by the Power of the Spirit," but I now have plenty of reservations about it. I like a lot of what Grudem does with it in his Systematic Theology, but these days I just try to follow the Bible as closely as I can.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

Wow, I'm not sure. I'd like to say, "all of them;" but that's probably not true. How about this: John 14:15-31

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?

I am absolutely not a cessasionist. That being said, I am kind of a reserved continualist. In my life, I have witnessed and practiced more abuse than anything else, and have seen many, many people led into confusion who lacked a bed-rock commitment to orthodoxy and the pre-eminent place of Scripture. Here's my deal, the New Testament provides a fairly extensive set of directives for people practicing the gifts, and they are almost never followed. We say, "the NT teaches that the gifts are for today," and then toss the Word out and practice them how we jolly well please. I have a big problem with that and don't think that it has anything much to do with what is in Scripture. In fact, I can count on one hand the times I have seen Charismatics actually seem worried about following these directions. SGM is one example that I am very grateful for, as well as Household of Faith Community Church. In fact, I particularly like your Dad's analogy of "keeping the fire in the fire place." As an aside: Apart from the benefit of sound doctrine in all other areas, I feel that two are greatly needed before further seeking to exercise the gifts. They are related = the Biblical and classically Reformed views on Anthropology and Sin/depravity. These two provide a healthy skepticism in regard to "following you heart" (which Jeremiah said was deceitful), and the need to rely all the more upon the revealed will and Word of God in Scripture - than upon emotion or experience. But I digress. I guess that makes me a clarified continualist.

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?

Yes and no. It depends on which friends, and I have disagreement and fellowship on both sides.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?

Encouragement, exhortation, teaching, and on a few occasions, tongues.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

Convicting me of sin and working in me both to will and to do His good pleasure. Illuminating Scripture, and causing me to be transformed in the renewing of my mind. Granting me power to love God, love others, walk in truth, and to grow in grace, sanctification, and humility.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

At first, confusion and conflict, b/c I had to throw out some old notions that didn't jive with Scripture - as well as, humble myself in admitting that I had been wrong. This has even led to me being misunderstood by some of my Charismatic friends who seem to fear that I am really a closet cessasionist, while the cessasionist tend to still think I might be a closet charismatic.
As to my Christian life though, it has greatly strengthened it. For example, I no longer fret over whether I took the wrong side walk, or "missed the voice of the Spirit" in regard to where to park my car, etc... I know from Scripture that God is sovereign. I don't need a "new" word, I need the old Word (thanks Sara Groves). His sheep hear His voice = He is not hiding from His children.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

Maybe this = Does He want all of our attention on Him, or does He prefer it mostly to be directed at the Son (not in a modalistic sense, for I am staunchly Trinitarian, but b/c a lot of Charismatic thought singles Him out in a way that has often struck me as out of step with Scripture).

I always wondered how you got so many stories in your book.

1. This is confusing: I grew up in a Charismatic Methodist church, but now I'm at a Reformed Baptist church. My theology is more like the latter.

2. I consider myself reasonably well informed. I know the role of the Holy Spirit in salvation which I think is the key, and how he becomes a part of my every day life. On Spiritual Gifts...I've listened to a lot but still massively uncertain.

3. My understanding of the Holy Spirit has definitely been mostly by church teaching (online and off) about the new birth.

By the way I think I've learned more from cessationists than continuationists (not saying that's always the case but it has been for me). Cessationists talk much more about new birth and santification than continuationists do. I think the idea that cessationists are clueless abut the Spirit is false.

4. John 3 or Romans 8.

5. I can't see how the Bible can be cessationist, but I don't think I've ever seen charismatic done well. So I'm a big fence sitter.

Most of the charismatic churches and conferences I've been to (and I've not just attended on one occasion, I've been an enthusiastic member) have put the emphasis heavy on the Spirit and not on Christ, and I agree with Jim Elliot:

"If men were filled with the Spirit they would not write books on that subject, but on the Person whom the Spirit has come to reveal. Occupation with Christ is God's object." Jim Elliot (Shadow of the Almighty, p91 if your interested)

6. I think it should always be a lesser issue than Christ, and as I said above this is my issue with a lot of Charismatic churches I've been to. They are what Packer calls "Charismaniacs" rather than "Charismatics"

My reformed church look down their noses at charismatics (mainly because they're even worse at pointing to Christ in my area than the places I grew up). Put it this way, I wouldn't like to admit at my Church I think the Bible is continuationist.

7. I don't think I have any miraculous gifts. I preach, which is an awesome gift to God.

8. I'd point to the fact that I am growing more convicted of sin, I understand scripture, I am actually beginning to stop sinning, I am being more kind and Godly and I preach with conviction.

9. It helped me to learn how to deal with sin. I prayed to him for help.

10.

- Do spiritual gifts continue?
- What is tongues does it continue?
- How do we know tongues are interpreted properly?
- What is prophecy? Is it preaching or future telling or what?
- Do miracles still happen?
- What benefit would it give me to be in a church that has the gifts of the Spirit that I wouldn't get in a church that only has the fruits of the Spirit?
- If I consist of flesh and spirit, is my personality in the spirit part of me as well?
- How can I use the Spirit to defeat sin even more than I do now?
- Is there anything I can do to enable the Spirit to reveal Christ more?

Many blessings for the book, I definitely want to buy it now!

1. Fundamental Baptist

2. Informed. Our church pastor makes it a point that none of the Trinity should never be left out in studies or preachings.

3. Personal Bible study and pastor's preaching

5. Cessationist

6. Non-issue

8. The Spirit deeply works in my thoughts. It's always there to rebuke me of any impure thought that enters my mind.

10. The speaking of tongues, is it really the Spirit that works in those who use it today?

Is the Spirit the same as conscience or are those two entirely different? If so, what are their differences? Because they seem so much the same.

1. Anglican (Anglo-Catholic wing)

2. I consider myself as informed on this as most other theological topics, in virtue of my theological education, my formation in church and by teaching, preparing for which has taught me when I was supposed to be teaching others.

3. The writings of the theological tradition over the last twenty centuries. But participation in the sacraments has also been deeply important: I still remember the press of the bishop's hands on my head at my confirmation, with the invocation of the Spirit; and weekly, often daily participation in the eucharist, with the 'calling down' (epiclesis) of the Spirit at the consecration of the elements. Also hymnody, especially the ancient hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus Sanctus, which I often recite when I kneel down to pray and probably more than any other text has served to remind me that we expect the Spirit to be at work in our lives today.

4. John 14.26 on the Paraclete (in the circles I was formed in, this was one of the usual titles for the Spirit and as a child, I loved to address the Spirit this way, and think of the Spirit as a Comforter).

5. I see no reason to rule out the continuation of the Spirit's gifts and I know people who say they speak in tongues and suchlike. I don't doubt the authenticity of their experience, since I see the reality and goodness of their faith--as long as they don't do it when I'm around (I'd be scared to death).

6. It's a non-issue--it's for 'them', charismatics and suchlike, and as such, we just don't talk about it.

8. At an ordinary Sunday morning service (8 am, December, freezing church) I heard a passage of scripture read that I've heard and read hundreds of times before. This time it hit me like a tidal wave and I knew it was God's word to me for the mid-distance future. I went home and started reading my Greek New Testament with an appetite I hadn't had for a long time and I haven't stopped since. The familiar has become new again for me through the Greek and each day, I look forward with sweet yearning to my quiet moments with my Testament--Deo gratias! For me, this is the Spirit working through the ordinary and I suppose that's where someone like me expects to encounter the Spirit.

10. Why glossolalia? I'm not hostile, but I'm not sure I see the point, if, as Paul says, it's not legitimate in the assembly without interpretation.

1. What church denomination do you belong to?
C&MA - Christian and Missionary Alliance

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?
Informed, but not any more than other topics, and probably a little bit less than some other topics.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)
I'd have to say personal bible study, Paul's teaching in particular stands out in my mind.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?
1st Corinthians 6:19 - The concept that we are not our own, we've been bought and paid for, and are a temple for the Holy Spirit.

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?
A continuationist, although I've never seen tongues practiced.

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?
It's a non-issue, it usually never comes up.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?
By the grace of God, I believe he's given me discernment and wisdom, and the gift of service. Others have said they've been blessed by things I've done for them or have said. (writing this feels weird - like I'm bragging or something)

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?
Tough one, I think he's working on helping me to conquer a recurring temptation that I am dealing with, and learning to abide in Him. I feel like the only way I can ever truly be of service or an encouragement to someone is if I love God and think about Him more than anything else in my life. But so often other stuff comes to the forefront and I feel like the Holy Spirit within me is suffocating.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?
It helped me to rely more on Him than I do on myself.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?
Why would the Spirit allow people to abuse his gift? Like the Corinthian church was doing? If someone speaks in tongues for the sole purpose of showing off or outdoing somebody else, why doesn't the Holy Spirit put a stop to it?

1. I don't belong to any denomination. I believe what the bible says is the truth. I don't believe that people should change it into what they believe it should say. But I've been raised a Baptist, protestant, and now i go to a non-denominational church.

2.Informed, I take a Bible as Literature class at my public school, and i read my bible everyday, and my daily bread, also your books have helped a lot to get to know God a lot better.

3.Personell Bible study, going to church, Reading his word, and handling things like he would want me to- and i always find him in that way, even prayer.

4.Collosians1:16-17... We are here for him and his purpose. We must serve him because he is our king. He will help us and guide us through, he is always working.

5.I don't know, I believe anything is possible with God. I believe the people in the Bible had these gifts, but i really don't know about today.

6.I've never really discussed it with anybody. But i do know that God has used me before- like my legs would be thier own mind, and i'd say things i never really thought about, it just came out of no where.

7.I guess i believe God gives us all gifts, even if were not serving him. Any kind of gifts like helping, and believing is like a gift to me.

8.The holy spirit that abides in me is working in every little place. He knows were i'm troubled, and most vulnerable, that's were he's working. My most powerful temptations, and the hard stuff in life- the holy spirit gives peace.

9.Every effect- God's Word is a powerful thing. It taught me to trust him, obey him, know him more... It just does something to you, it's too difficult to explain, and overwhelming.

10.Does everyone, even unbelievers have the holy spirit?

1. Non-denominational, elder-based.

2. Uninformed, never really undertaken a formal study of the Holy Spirit. I feel like the Holy Spirit is the least understood part of the Trinity for me.

3. My own study (minimal), church's teaching (also minimal), books (nothing I can think of specifically)

4. John 14:15 - 17

5. Continuationist

6. Not a big issue currently but has been quite a big issue in our fellowship particularly with the way the gifts are practised.

7. I have no idea really. I just try to serve him the best way I can.

8. Conviction mostly, comfort. I find this whole area quite confusing!

10. Heaps! How do I really know when He's speaking to me? Or if its just my own thoughts/heart? How important is knowing what your gifting is?

Can't wait for the book!

1. Pentecostal, Brasil, Fortaleza Church named Videira.
2. Yes, I consider I'm informed.
3. I guess that a little of everything contributes for the learning, it depends on as God acts in our life. In me He uses the church.
4. 1st Corinthians 6:19
5. Continuationist
6. I guess it's charism and issue. I have friends who have differents gifts and it's not a problem, together we learn more about God, without problems.
7. Well with a good voice to sing, and a very great power to pray and have incredible answers and inclusive miracles! That keeps my family and friends next to Him.
8. Now I feel that He is changing me at my relationships, and for the apocalypse.
9. That it's more easy to keep my thoughts away from sin, and my actions, of course. And it's more easy to change my mind.
10. He gave many gifts to me, and I am always making of everything a little, It makes me sad because I want to find a specific place or gift to glorify Him.

Well, I expect that my answers helps a lot.

1. What church denomination do you belong to?
Pentecostal

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?
somewhere in between

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)
church teaching

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?
Gal 5:22

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?
Continuatiionalist

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?
an issue
yes

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?

tongues
8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

understandingin my academics
9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

i often wonder if i'm just rambling on when i speak in tongues

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

P.C.A. (Korean)

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

I would consider myself somewhat informed. I have read or heard the different positions on the Holy Spirit and his gifts. I have a couple books on the H.S. and His gifts.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

I would say the bible and my personal experience of the Holy Spirit after getting saved. Also missionary testimonies about how God is moving in different parts of the world. Jack Deere, Wayne Grudem and Sam Storms have influenced me. And other believers I have met who have shared their experiences of the Spirit in their own lives which has helped me to understand my own experiences.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

Ephesians 5:18 and Gal.5:16

At the church I attend the issue is rarely brought up. When it comes to my Christian friends I have some who hold the continuationist position, some who are cessationists, some who are open but cautious and some who have not decided.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?

I honestly do not know. I have prayed and asked God for certain gifts such as evangelist, prophecy, or tongues but I'm not too sure. Other believers have told me that they think I have the gift of evangelist or others have commented that I'm good at teaching when it comes to the opportunities I have taught and another has said that they think I have the gift of intercession. Since I don't know I just continue to serve at the church I'm at.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

Conviction of sin.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

For instance when it comes to the filling of the Spirit, I have learned, by sermons or books, that it is something to be sought after and something to be experienced. I have learned that it is experiential in nature and not some kind of subconscious abstract truth that we just accept. Learning this has made me hunger to continually be filled with the Spirit. It has helped me to be clear of my own experiences and to not be afraid of seeking to encounter God through subjective experience.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

Although I have my own position on this I wanted to know " Whether one calls it the 'baptism of the Spirit' or the 'filling of the Spirit' would you agree that all christians should continually seek after this subjective empowering experience of God after conversion ? "

Another question " If one takes the position that the filling of the Spirit is not experiential but just a subconscious influence that one is to assume how does that affect the christian life ? Does this lead to living the christian life by one's own discipline and grit and determination ? "

Another related question " Is it a major error to believe that all christians are already filled with the Spirit ? Because if one assumes all christians are already filled with the Spirit then that means there is nothing more to be sought after.

1. Non-denominational; affiliated with Sovereign Grace Ministries

2. Becoming informed?

3. Initially, growing up in a church which has traditionally emphasized the person & work of the Spirit (among other things) as a significant aspect of their teaching & ministry. More recently, reading particular books on the topic.

4. 1Cor. 12:3 - "No one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except by the Holy Spirit." I think it does a good job of summing up the Spirit's work.

5. Continuationist.

6. An issue, but a small issue. I have friends, even within my local church, who differ on this.

7. There's a level of awkwardness in listing what you believe are your gifts. Here's a try: hospitality, wisdom, teaching, times of operating in "prophetic" gifting, leadership.

That being said, I think there's some artificiality in listing out gifts. It's not wholly artificial; the New Testament does exactly that, after all! But often the lists in Scripture are rather ad hoc and not technical designations. This is seen in the silliness in, for instance, attempting to make a sharp distinction between a "word of knowledge" and a "word of wisdom."

8. Showing me the beauty of Christ in His Word. Convicting me of the ways I undervalue God. Giving me wisdom in my evangelistic relationships. Sustaining me as I serve in the church. Imparting faith in seasons of trials.

9. Made me more aware of the Spirit's activity in my life and my dependence upon Him--made the Spirit an "explicit" aspect (and not just aspect, but *person*) living within me.

1. pentacoastal/ assemblies of God

2. my church leaders have done countless sermons on the Holy Spirit, but I still feel that I personally have a lot to learn.

3. the bible, in it's explanation of who the Holy Spirit is, but also what I have been taught at church. What made the difference was experiencing the Holy spirit it my daily life though I still have so much to learn about Him.

4. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.Jn 14:26

5. a continuationist

6. It could be a big issue. what I mean by could is that I do have friends who are that other type of believer ( not continualist... the other one...i can't remember what it's called..) To be honest, we rarely ever have real discussions about it, because I'm scared I'll be a stumbling block to them. Some of them are ready to commit to the truths of the bible, and are a bit scared of the whole talking in tongues stuff... And you can imagine why, after all the drama that has often been going in pentacostal churches with "spirit filled" leaders. So I try to not approach the subject unless they want to talk about it. also, they know me so I guess God's grace in my testimony gives what I have to say a bit more credibility.
Also, there's the fact that I personally feel like some pentacostals have turned the action of the Holy spirit into something mystical, if you see what I mean.... while I believe that the Holy Spirit is a person who is among us and who has supernatural powers, I also believe that He is One with a Holy God whose ways are not our ways.

7. well, i make a distinction between the gifts and the expressions of the holy Spirit. As for me, I feel that i have been entrusted with the gift of speaking words of encouragement. When I am cnnected to God, it comes out naturally. when I'm not connected to God, well that's another story... the gift doesnt seem to be there anymore.
As for an expression of the holy spirit, I strongly believe in the speaking in tongues. countless times, it has helped me pray for people in difficult situations for whom i didn't know how to pray for.

8. I would point that person to the fruits of the Holy Spirit in my life. for exemple, I have been praying for a gentle heart, for more discipline in my prayer life, and it's getting better. So I would point that person to what the Holy spirit is changing inside of me.

9. understanding the holy Spirit more and his purpose have led me to undertanding that I am not alone. God has never and will never leave me on my own. Whether it comes to resisting temptations or carving a stronger christ discipleship, God never leaves me on my own. He sends His Holy Spirit to do the work for me, in me, and through me!!! isn't that amazing? isn't that love?

10. we know that the holy spirit can get sad when we sin, but can it actually get fed up with us and leave us for good? can God do that?

1. What church denomination do you belong to?
Church of England

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?
Informed. I grew up a charismatic and had a lot of charismatic experiences. The Holy Spirit was talked about a lot and I knew the reality of his gifts and fruit in my life as I grew in my faith as a teenager and young adult. I ended up studying post graduate theology at an evangelical college in Oxford, UK with a view to church work or university chaplaincy. Life looked predictable. Then, half way through training the rug was pulled from under my feet. I was asked to take on a high level of responsibility in a well known christian movement here in the uk and had a family crisis all within a few months. I desperately needed a walk with God that could sustain me in these extreme situations and I realized that I didn't have it. I became increasingly uncomfortable with a lot of practices within the charismatic church, not because I didn't believe in what we were doing but because so often it felt like they were becoming the focus to the point that it sometimes felt like we were trying to help God along with stirring up emotions and gifts.
I decided to spend the rest of my time at Oxford looking into how the Holy Spirit works within the church and in the individual believer, doing one dissertation on charismata in Paul and a second on the Trinity in Jonathan Edward's Religious Affections. I how have a confident and robust understanding of who the Holy Spirit is and how he works in our lives.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)
Doctrine: The New Testament (!), Augustine, Jonathan Edwards (in particular Religious Affections), Barth, Zizoulas, Stott, Grenz, Luther (not a usual one on this topic but I wrote an essay on his spiritual experiences that was v influential on me),
Biblical Studies: Max Turner ("The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts"), Lots of commentaries, in particular Fee, Barrett, Schatzmann, Dunn, Thiselton, Conzelmann, etc
Church, etc: my friend and pastor Vaughan Roberts, personal experience (!), less recently the Soul Survivor movement in the UK, Vineyard church's teaching.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?
Acts 2 - the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on all people and the way he enabled Peter to preach and the amazing ways he began to built the random bricks of the eclectic believers into the early church... what a chapter, what a God!

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing revelatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?
Continuationist

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?
yes but it seems that the difference is mostly around risk rather than theology: in particular risk about scaring nonbelievers if we were to practice them in our main sunday services, but I suspect it's also about risk of over-emotionalism and the result is that many of the charismatic gifts never get practiced in some churches in my city.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?
Prophecy - I've seen God use this in evangelistic situations where I have a hunch about something specific that is important for the person in coming to Christ. I've also seen God use it in pastoral situations or in discerning direction when I've been on a leadership team.
Hospitality - I've been privileged to see God use me in blessing both Christians and nonchristians through this. My current job (of chaplain in a university setting) would be very different if I didn't have this gift. I would find it much harder to share myself with the students and to create environments where they feel loved.
I wish I had the gift of Administration!

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?
How I've grown in fruits of the Spirit (!) through his work, How he has opened up scripture to me in ways that I could not have known by myself and enabled me to understand the words of Jesus. How he is sanctifying me and (most importantly) how I see him at work in and through my church.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?
A BIG ONE!!! (praise God!) John's Gospel leads us to expect this. Looking into scripture, trying to hold my charismatic experience in an open hand totally transformed my life at a time when I was shaky in whether my charismatic experience was a valid way to continue to live my life. I'm now more confident in my practice of charismatic gifts and in charismatic experiences particularly in corporate times of sung worship. I'm secure that if I share a prophetic sense with someone or offer to pray for them to be healed that I am following scripture. It has made me a little more discerning of some of the practices I used to feel fine with but systematic study of scripture on this topic has helped me to worship God more as I see him at work and benefit from the gifts he himself gives to the whole body and the small fruit of his presence in my own life. I'm so excited that you're hoping to do this in your book (whatever your conclusions) and pray God uses your work to help many come to love him, Father, Son and Spirit more!

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

1. What church denomination do you belong to? non-denominational-used to be assemblies of God

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

very informed. my church went through some crazy times both good and bad that i would have to say were because of the Holy Spirit and works that were not of the Holy Spirit. I grew up with charismatic parents bringing me to all sorts of different conferences and meetings where people were praying or singing in the spirit, being slain in the spirit, screaming(still not convinced that one is the Holy Spirit-I dk), and being miraculously healed.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person) Definitely personal experience and observations of others. I would have to say that through it all my father was always able to answer all my questions, present everything in such a logical way, that it always made perfect sense to me because he is a walking encyclopedia who has done much more research than I have.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life? 1 Corinthians 12

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?
continuationist. i know for a fact those gifts are still present.

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?
It was actually an issue for me in the Christian college I went to. One of my really good friends was seriously upset because her brother's girlfriend spoke in tongues. I was dumbfounded that someone so sweet and nice could be so narrowminded. We had a long discussion where I told her rationally what I believed and had experienced. I found out that she had never met anyone before who'd experienced the Holy Spirit in such a real way. She'd only been told that speaking in tongues was "bad". The conversation ended with her deciding to read more about it.
Other times it was an issue when I was interested in a guy. If I knew for a fact he was not on the same page with me then I pretty much could rule them out before even praying about it because I knew what God would be telling me. I need whoever I end up with to be on the same page as me with that or he will never understand where I have come from or any of the major things that have gone on in my life.
Currently, it is not an issue and it doesn't come up amongst my non-christian friends.

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?
God has given me the gift of tongues. I pretty much only use that gift in private, but I have seen some breakthroughs in people's lives that I would attribute to the praying in tongues even while I was by myself. It's very nice when I am at loss for words to be able to let God's Spirit just take over and give me the words. I also have a knack for picking up languages when I have travelled to other countries.
It's not my story, but my sister tells a story about how when she was in Africa someone was praying in tongues and one of the girls she worked with was from Israel and looked at the person praying in tongues and was like "You speak Hebrew?" And the girl was like "no" and the girl from Israel could not get over that this person did not speak Hebrew because she was praying in it, in an older version though that people apparently don't use anymore.
I also have the gift of the wisdom of knowledge where I often sense things before they happen. Or I will be praying and receive a word or something edifying that really touches people. Often I have no clue what is going on in the person's life, but they will tell me how spot on it is. That can only be God.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?
I would say that I can see the Spirit guiding me when I am trying to figure out what step to take next in life. Looking back on where I've been I can see what he's done. When I am working with my students I can definitely sense his presence at times when I am dealing with them. When dealing with the student's parents as well. I need to constantly be seeking God and letting His spirit be guiding me. My answer to question 9 also has that answer.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

I learned that you really need to make sure that no matter how guided you are by the spirit you also need to back it up by scripture. I would have to say that my understanding of the Spirit increased through the absence of the study of God's word. My church went through a phase where everything was led by the Spirit. To the point where people prayed about whether or not they should go to McDonald's or Wendy's. Friends were not allowed over my house because the moms had prayed about it.(I was apparently a bad influence because I was not homeschooled and went to a christian school) They even prayed about what color they thought was God's favorite. Orange was the answer btw... Crazy little details God may care about, but the Bible does not exactly back up. Yes, God cares about the numbers of hairs on your head, but we are not puppets. God does give us some free will.
I say absence of the Spirit because the church then went from everyone being super strict and pompous to within a matter of three months-two affairs, which broke up families and led to two teen pregnancies, a murder, a stabbing-all in a church of less than 50 people in small town New England. It was awful, but I strongly believe it was because things got out of hand. Though people may have thought the Spirit was guiding them, I truly do not think it was the Holy Spirit at all. There were many times I felt very uncomfortable during services. I stopped attending that church for a while because things stopped being based on scripture. My sister left wanting nothing to do with the Holy Spirit. People were acting on their gut feelings which they believed to be the Spirit.
This was over three years ago and I believe I am slowly coming to understand the Spirit better through studies on 1 Corinthians, through that passage in Romans, Acts 2, and even when Jesus was baptized and the dove descended upon Him. Before that I only knew Him from experience. Experience is definitely important, but you also need to know how to handle that gift. It is a precious gift God gave us after Jesus went back to heaven. To know that His Spirit still comes down and guides us is amazing. I think we just need to be careful and discerning. I can see how God and even the Holy Spirit have since brought those teens to a better understanding of God through their daughters. They may never have turned to God otherwise. I don't know. Families are still ruined, people are still in jail, we are still human, and we make a mess sometimes. We just need to be informed about the Spirit and discerning. Not everything is from God. But God is clearly doing something, and I believe that when He guides us and lets us know things with that little nudge or gut feeling that can be His Holy Spirit. But when those nudges do not follow scripture then they may not be from the Holy Spirit.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit? I do sometimes wonder the difference between when something is God or the Holy Spirit. Maybe there's not because they are the same person. All I can say is that that is why we need ALL the gifts of the Spirit working together. Discernment, wisdom, knowledge, along with tongues, interpretations, all keep each other in check so that we can be sure when something is from God.

I am clearly passionate about this topic! Sorry for the long answers, I'm so glad I just stumbled onto your site because I feel like there are so many people out there that I want to warn to please be careful and don't mess with the Holy Spirit. Truly seek God and don't carried away with things.

1. What church denomination do you belong to?

Non Denominational

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

Informed. He lives in me.... i've actually received the baptism of The Holy Spirit.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

In all honesty, experience. It was the encountering of the Holy Spirit that opened my understanding to Him. After this initial encounter, i began to hunger to really know Jesus more and find an explanation of this burning fire inside of me. Though i'd never really read the bible, and was very ignorant of Scripture (apart from John 3:16 lol), i figured the only way to understand what's happening was to read the Bible.... cause i just KNEW that i knew it was God! So i began to read, and passages about The Holy Spirit would just leap off the pages at me. Some things i'd read and feel the burning passion of the Author present with me as i was reading. It was like someone inside of me would stand up and say "AMEN, this is true." i'm in fellowship at a rather "charismatic" assembly now(and have been all along), but i do wrestle with certain things in our gatherings... and in openness and humility, i'm currently seeking the counsel of God via. The Scriptures, The Spirit (and the saints... can't leave out the saints... praise God for the saints lol), to be even more informed on The Person and Work of The Holy Spirit.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

There hasn't really been any "one" verse, but here are a few that really move me as i read; Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, Luke 11:9-13, John 14, 15, & 16, The entire book of Acts! (Tho the text IS inspired, i don't believe the titles we historically give them are... i believe Acts should be entitled "The Acts of The Holy Spirit!" ....hope this isn't seen as "snarky"), Romans 5:5 (Mmmmmm), Romans 8, & 15 (pretty much the whole book of Romans, but these two jump at me), 1 Corinthians 6:19, 2 Corinthians 13:14, 1 Thessalonians 1:5, 2 Timothy 1:14, Hebrews 10, 1 John 5:7, Jude 1:20, i could go on and on, but i won't... and yeah, let me not forget this one; 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 :D

5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?

A completely charismatic continuationist... with a conservative curve of compassion.

6. Is the issue of spiritual gifts (or being charismatic or non-charismatic) a big issue in the circles you're in or a non-issue? Do you have Christian friends who differ with you on this issue?

Spiritual gifts are like a main course in our fellowship. They ARE very appetizing, but i do hold them as just appetizers and JESUS IS THE MAIN COURSE. This is something i wrestle with where i am... but i love my charismatic brethren very much. And yes, i have good brethren here that disagree with me, and i feel they just don't see the danger of having "the spot light on the gifts more than than The Giver." But i still love them and because of that love i fight to not be critical of other charismatic brethren who don't see this. And it's not about being "right" all the time... but rather, doing what IS right in God's sight. One to work on... lol

7. If you're a continuationist what spiritual gifts do you think God has given you? And how have you seen them used to encourage other Christians and glorify God?

It's kind of hard to pinpoint just 'one' particular gift. The Holy Spirit is in me, and i believe, and have experienced, that the ability that comes from Him to operate in all the gifts is present. i do sense a lean towards the prophetic gifting; and that is most often expressed through me musically. When leading songs in the assembly during corporate worship, there have been fresh songs on the spot given to me to sing out. Often these songs are just scriptures that God kind of "breathes to me" at that moment to speak to someone individually, or to us as a group. And other times it's something that is just a creative way of us expressing in song; our affection to God, or His affection for us with biblical integrity. When these songs have been sung, there's a strong sense of the heightened awareness that God's presence (that is always present) is in the room. It's like; He's here all along, but now He has our attention as we get a strong sense that the "The King of Kings is here." It's amazing... and we all are so strengthened and built up in the faith... and God is so glorified! God things happen when "The King shows up;" people yield their hearts to Him to sit as ruler and owner there... and are saved!, miracles take place, lives are changes, the hardest hearts melt in His presence, people are healed (mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally).... God's glory is beheld and He is exalted in the hearts and minds of all who behold Him! Moreover, as a song writer, i aim to only transcribe the Heart of God... maybe that is a prophetic thing? i don't know, call it what ever, but as feeble and fickle as i can be, i KNOW it's only possible to know and communicate the thoughts and intentions of God's heart through The Holy Spirit. And also, i speak in tongues. There have been times of tongues in the congregation where there was an interpretation that just edified us all, and other times in my "prayer closet" where i sense inward strength and fervor stirring when i speak in tongues.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

He's causing me to really know who the One and True Living God is, and making me more of a demonstration of that. He gives me the ability to reflect the light of God's love and truth in many practical ways. He is the One that causes me to emulates the nature and character of God; love, joy, peace, long-suffering (patience), gentleness, goodness, faith (trust), meekness, temperance (self-control) etc.. Though there is fruit evident, but i am still yet a work in progress.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

The particular passage giving a contrast between "the 'works' of the flesh" and "the 'fruit' of The Spirit," was a study i recently greatly benefited from in a practical way. Upon realizing that the character and nature of God is something that the Spirit naturally produces, i've been freed from trying to use "the work of my flesh" to produce "the fruit of The Spirit." It frees me to be at rest in Him and just trust.... which is bearing good fruit. It's just good stuff always when we cease from our striving of trying to be "righteous" and allow God to work His righteousness in us and through us. For THEN, He get's ALL the props for it! Since this study, iit's not that i do not seek to "obey God's commands," but the very strength of this obedience is achieved through trust. "The obedience of the faith" or more plainly put, trust based obedience.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit?

i'd like to know more about deliverance from demonic oppression/possesion and casting out of demonic spirits. i desire to see people free from bondage and oppression of the enemy, and discern when there is genuine supernatural battle... and how to engage in that battle to manifest the victory that was won by God at the cross through the power of the resurrection of Jesus! i believe and trust that God will give me the grace i need in those situations, and open my eyes to see so i would not be "ignorant of the enemies devices."

1. Baptist, technically. But I'm really not a denominationally confined person.
2. Uninformed, my friend, for I believe I do not yet know enough to say I know the Holy Spirit fully. I am saved, I just haven't quite grasped the intensity of it all.
3. Mostly personal Bible study, but also conversations with my pastor and Christian friends.
4. I wish I could pinpoint one verse or another, but being the steadily changing teenager I am, I cannot. However, Psalm 25:5 has been a big one for me recently. God's been telling me to learn patience, a kind of patience that I am just beginning to comprehend.
5. Gifts of the Spirit come in all forms, so I say with a confident mind that I am a continuationist. God doesn't just take a break!
6. Not really, gifts are something that may not always be recognized in my circles, but they are certainly believed to be there.

8. Keeping me sane, in point of fact. The trials of this day and age are rough on anyone, myself included.
9. It helped me to persevere when faced with persecution by non-Christians.
10. What is the right or best view to take on the Holy Spirit being used to convey the message to non-believers?

(even though I'm a fan of your book from the Philippines, and even though this reply is kinda late, I would like to share)

1. I am a Christian participating in the Victory Christian Fellowship (an affiliate of Every Nation)

2. I am informed about this matter. When we were young kids, our parents told us through the stories of the bible. And sometimes, we are exposed to the bible sudies wherein we are allowed to share our insight about the Holy Spirit

3. I give thanks to my parents! And having friend that studies the bible is a great help.

4. Mmmm...I think its the book of the Corinthians (1st Corinthians Chap 12)

5. I think I'm a continuationist. I believe the prophecies still lingers us even through this day. My mother alway said that the gift of tongue is a very big blessing from our God above (errr, sorry, kinda confused at the question).

6. The spiritual gifts can move you - this matter is often debated with others who doesn't really believe in this. Between my family and my co-bible study buddies, it's not very much a big deal.

7. I think its the power of music within me! heheh... Whenever I sing a powerful song of praise and worship, I can LITERALLY bring a person to his knees and ask God for forgiveness or worshipping him(that happened one time during a mass)

8. I think the Holy Spirit made me realize that we have a purpose in this world. I am also enlightened that the Holy Spirit says that there's a very Awesome and Loving God; and he gave his Son to demonstrate it.

9. I am able to make decision not only for myself, I am able to pray for his guidance and ask some hints if whatever I will do is for the common good and for his glory. I am also able to pray to him, not only when I am in need, I also talk to him like a father, a boy friend, and as an Ultimate Saviour.

10. Why does the Holy Spirit keeps on being turned down by the other people? I know that the Holy Spirit is very much powerful... How will I convey this matter to others who doesn't know of its marvelous power?

1. What church denomination do you belong to?
Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, Sta.Mesa, Philippines

2. Compared to other theological topics, do you consider yourself informed or uninformed about the Holy Spirit? Why is that?

I'm well informed about the Holy Spirit, and working on other theological topics. It will be better to understand about the Holy Spirit as He is our guide to understand the WORD of the Lord.

3. What has most influenced your understanding of the Spirit? (i.e., personal Bible study, your church's teaching, a particular book or person)

The Holy Spirit Himself, because without His encouragement I will never have any idea about Him. The Holy Bible helps a lot. In our evangelist meeting, we are reading the The Holy Spirit book written by Bishop Edir Macedo of UCKG HelpCenter), we are learning about the Holy Spirit together with our Pastor.

4. What one verse or passage of scripture is most influential in shaping your understanding of the Holy Spirit and his work in your life?

Romans ch. 8 and John 6:29
5. In regard to the gifts of the Spirit are you a cessasionist (believing relevatory gifts like tongues and prophecy ceased after the Apostles) or a continuationist (believing, that while the canon of scripture is closed, these gifts function in the present day)?

I believe the Lord inside of me the Gifts of Revelation and Gifts of Inspiration and as the purpose of the Lord, the Lord Jesus could use me by having the Gifts of Power.

Gifts of Revelation:
Word of Wisdom
Word of Knowledge
Discerning Spirits

Gifts of Inspiration
Speaking in tongues
Prophesy
Interpretation

Gifts of Power
Gifts of Healing
Performing of Miracles
Faith

On my understanding about the gifts of the Holy Spirit, though the gifts of the Holy Spirit have its high importance what is more important is we live according to the way of the Holy Spirit.

8. Regardless of your perspective on spiritual gifts, what specific ways are you aware of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life presently? Or to put it a little differently, if someone were to ask, "Where is the Spirit working in your life?" what would you point to?

That's the main question, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are gifts. And what would really matter is the fruits of the Holy Spirit (Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfullness, Gentleness, Self-Control) should definitely manifest in our lives as an evidence that the Holy Spirit lives and work inside of us. The fruits of the Holy Spirit according to Bp Macedo are the result of a life in communion with the Lord through the Holy Spirit.

9. If your knowledge or understanding about the Spirit has ever increased through study of God's word what practical effect did it have on your Christian life?

I'm very much thankful that the Lord had shown me the importance of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit take away the worries in my life... and He puts deep inside me to live in faith in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

10. What question or questions do you have about the person and work of the Spirit? None so far.
