Kings: New TV Drama Based on Life of King David

I saw an ad for this NBC television drama last year in Time magazine. The show, called Kings, is a modern-day retelling of the story of King David from the Old Testament. The Christian Post has this article about the show. The two-hour series premiere is tomorrow at 8/7c. It will be interesting to see how they adapt the story. Hopefully they'll handle the more sordid aspects of David's life tastefully.

[Update: I've heard from friends who have seen previews and it sounds like there are some explicit scenes, so please use discretion and don't take this post as a recommendation of the series.]

Hi Josh,
I was just wondering whether you could comment on the values you expect of TV? I ask because you 'hope the programme handles the sordid aspects of David's life tastefully?' How should TV handle sordid without being, well, sordid?

Have we made the Bible tasteful? Downplaying what was meant to be shocking, have we made it 'safe for children' so to speak?

I'm not sure what the answer is, but can we be accused of double standards if we applaud, say Mel Gibsons Passion with all its distasteful blood and violence, yet require David's failings to be handled tastefully?

Any help, much appreciated

That looks neat! I hope it is good...
Funny, I am writing a paper right now comparing David's life with that of Idrimi of Alalakh. It is interesting how similar their lives were, though separated by a few centuries.

I thought the show was good, very well made. After watching it, I'm wondering if they're going to follow the lead of some liberal OT scholars and portray a homosexual relationship of some sort between David and Jonathan. I sure hope not, because the show sure does have promise.

Will there be new episodes of Kings? If so, when?

We're hooked!
