Kevin DeYoung: Just Do Something

The following is the foreword I wrote for Kevin DeYoung's new book Just Do Something.

Just%20Do%20Something%20Kevin%20DeYoung.jpgIt is God's will for you to read this book. Yes, I'm talking to you. What are the odds that you would "just happen" to pick up this book and flip open to this page and start reading? Obviously it's a sign. Of all the millions of books in the world, you found this one. Wow. I have chills. Do not pass up this divinely orchestrated moment. If you miss this moment there's a good chance you will completely miss God's will for the rest of your life and spend your days in misery and regret.

Now that I've scared you, let me acknowledge that everything in the previous paragraph is total baloney. It's bunk. Not true at all. Actually, I don't know if it's God's will for you to read this book. But I do think that reading it could be a really good idea.

If you're prone to think of God's will in the way I so threateningly described it, this book will help set you straight. Kevin DeYoung is a skilled pastor, theologically astute and a clear communicator. He gives you content but makes it easy to absorb and understand.

In Just Do Something he will show you what trips you up from moving forward in decisions. He'll talk about how God speaks to us and what it means be guided by wisdom. In a gentle and loving way he will challenge you. There's a good chance that you've picked up some faulty ways of thinking about this issue. I love the way no-nonsense way Kevin pulls us back to truth: "God is not a magic eight ball we shake up and peer into whenever we have a decision to make. He is a good God who gives us brains, shows us the way of obedience, and invites us to take risks for him."

I'm a pastor. And the highest praise I can give this book is that it is my "go to" book on decision making and "finding God's will." If you were in my church and you came to be and said, "I have a big decision to make (marriage, job, house, etc), and I need to know what God wants me to do!" I would put this book in your hands.

It's liberating and encouraging and even where it smacks you up side the head (which it does once in awhile) you'll be better for the smack. You'll think more clearly and more biblically.

So read this book. You'll be wiser because of it.

You can buy the book here. Kevin will be a main speaker at Next 2009 in Baltimore over Memorial Day weekend. For more information about Kevin and his ministry read "Who is Kevin DeYoung?" compiled by Justin Taylor.

Hi Joshua,
This sounds like a great book. What you mentioned is something that I'd been thinking about a lot as a Christian - the Divine plan and God's will for me to go left instead of right, eat pizza instead of pasta, to wake up at 10 instead of 11...
I don't want to devalue God's real intricate plans but sometimes it just seemed too tedious...

I've read the book by Charles Swindoll on the mystery of God's will which has helped. I'll definitely be picking up this book. Thanks. :)

Great intro-it really got my attention, then I had a good laugh when you called it "baloney." Too often we as Christians want a sign from God, when the Bible has already told us what we can/can't/should/shouldn't be doing. Sometimes it's easier to believe that God has told us to do something versus using discernment, prayer, and wise guidance to make sound decisions. I'd have to admit that I get caught up in that type of mystical thinking from time to time. I'm glad for yet another resource to challenge my thinking in this area.

Hey Josh,
Thanks for the recommendation. I got it yesterday and finished it this morning. I couldn't put it down. It's an extremely helpful book! I imagine it'll be a mainstay for our college/career ministry. It also made me more excited about the NEXT speaker that I, until yesterday, knew almost nothing about.

We're looking forward to the pastor's conference (and Scott Scheff's wedding!). See you guys soon.

I read your blog about once a week and i love it! Thank you for the time you put into keeping this updated! But especially today i had to comment on it, because i have to share how amazed i am at God!!
When i saw who was speaking at New Attitude (i still cant think of it as Next), i was distraught that John Piper wouldnt be there and some guy "Kevin DeYoung" was instead. I had no idea who he was and didnt have the motivation to find out. My season of life is in the middle of some big transitions and when i saw this book recommendation my heart jumped! "YES, God PERFECT! im gonna buy it tomorrow at church, if they have it." -i thought... how timely. Then i saw who the author was. WOW! Not only can i not wait to read the book but now i cannot WAIT to hear him at New Attitude also!
Thank you again for this post and i cant wait to see God continue to faithfully work! :)
