Brit Hume Roundup

brit_hume.jpgJustin Taylor provides a helpful summary of the controversy swirling around Brit Hume as well as background information on Hume's faith as a Christian. Taylor writes, "[Hume] isn't backing down from his recent comments that Tiger Woods should turn to Christ for redemption and forgiveness." In fact on WTOP News Radio Hume became even more clear in his presentation of the gospel saying:

Christianity is uniquely and especially about redemption and forgiveness. That is what the cornerstone of what the faith is about. Now other faiths aren't hostile to the idea, but think of what the message of Christ and Christianity is. It is that the God of the universe sent His only begotten Son, who died a hideous death on the cross, to atone for all of our sins. And we are thereby offered through that act a new covenant in which we are offered forgiveness and redemption on a continuing basis in return for our faith in God and our continuing efforts to live the Christian life. That is a unique doctrine.(Via Denny Burke)

Such a clear and faithful statement of the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ is rare and I pray God will use it for the salvation of many who hear it and read it.

Also, Sarah Pulliam Bailey at Christianity Today did an interview with Hume in which he shares that he had been thinking about making a statement to Tiger Woods for some time.

And Peter Wehner's article "Hume's Gentle Witness" is worth reading. He concludes by saying:

Most of us spend an inordinate amount of time on shallow discussions about largely inconsequential and evanescent issues; talking honestly about matters of faith and meaning shouldn't be off-limits. In fact, we should welcome such conversations more often, in more forums, and in a more relaxed, comfortable, and confident way....Brit Hume is rightly recognized as one of the finest journalists of his generation. He also turns out to be a man of deep Christian faith who isn't afraid to say so. That makes him not only rare, but very nearly unique. And admirable. (Via Robin Boisvert)

wow - that's brilliant. praise God!

Thank you for the update. I'd heard a lot about this on other blogs but didn't actually see the clip until last night. Now the extra quotes you've given here are even better.

Thank so much for sharing.

From the Left, or the Middle, or wherever...

I think part of the reason Mr. Hume has been lambasted has been the medium -- FOX News -- not necessarily the message.

I happen to be a Born Again Libertarian, (plus a Christian) who spent most of my 30+ years on the Left of most issues. That means that, until recently, I would have been put in the same camp as Dan Rather's "Left-leaning" CBS News.

That being said, I'm trying to imagine what Dan, a man of faith, would be facing if he were still on the same network and said exactly what Mr. Hume said? Not saying I have the answer, but I can guess he'd get much less negative attention.

Being affiliated with Fox doesn't help with secular media, but it is absolutely about his Christian faith.
There is another worthwhile read on Brit Hume on the Christian Press website.
