A family picture taken in the summer of 2008.
Just a few weeks ago our family was hit hard with the news that my dear mother, Sono Harris, has stage IV cancer. It that started in her colon has spread to her liver and the base of her lungs.
As word has gotten out, our family has been wonderfully overwhelmed by people's expressions of support. So many friends from across the country love and respect my mom and it's been encouraging to know so many are praying for her. I can't tell you how much this means to us. Thank you.
Shannon and I flew out to Oregon for a visit over Mother's Day weekend. It was so good to have extended time just to sit and talk, laugh and enjoy fellowship with my parents. My mom is very strong in spirit and full of joy. She hasn't lost her sense of humor. She is trusting God and rejoicing in her savior, Jesus.
She's also doing all she can to fight the cancer. Mom is pursuing alternative treatment and all of us remain hopeful that by God's grace she can and will beat it.
Right now the future is completely unknown. There's no timetable, no certainty. I've thought many times during the past few weeks that this cancer has simply highlighted and heightened the reality that is always true of our lives: we never know how much time we have and each day is a gift. So as 1 Peter 1 puts it, we're grieved by this trial, but we're rejoicing in the living hope we have through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Regardless of what happens in Mom's body, the new life she has through Christ that first transformed her 37 years ago is imperishable and grows stronger day by day.
Please pray for Mom's healing and for grace as she eats a limited and not always super-fun diet. Also pray for my Dad, my sister Sarah and brother James who working hard to care for her each day. I'm so grateful for the way my sister in particular has stepped up to serve. And please pray for the time our family will have together in early June. We're going to Oregon for two weeks. And my brothers Alex and Brett cancelled a much anticipated trip to the Philippines so we could all be together (a big thanks to all the Rebelutionaries in the Philippines who have been so understanding and supportive!)
At appropriate times, I'll share updates on this post and new prayer requests. Thank you again for your concern for my Mom.

I am praying for your precious mother and for you and your entire family. May God richly bless you all.
Praying for your dear mom, a picture of graciousness. I was able to thank her in person for your family's ministry at the Do Hard Things conference in DC in September.

Praying for your Mom and family right here in their backyard of Gresham, Oregon.
God's peace, strength and comfort be with them now during this difficult time.
praying for total healing
We have been praying for your Mom and your whole family. Please keep us posted.
I think of your mom often and am praying for her and your whole family.
Josh, we will be praying for your mother & family. Jesus is ALREADY being glorified through this situation, what a hope we have in Him.
Josh, will be praying and spreading the word to others to pray. So sorry to hear the battle your mom is facing. We just went through a similar battle with a very close friend who battled advanced cancer for about a year. It's bittersweet in the sense that it's a horrible thing to battle, but the quality of faith that shines through a life that goes through that kind of firey trial is just unbelieveable (such as Chris Klicka's physical battles and life of faith). No matter what we go through here, it's amazing how God uses devestating circumstances to bring brilliant glory to Himself through us. May your mom and your whole family's lives continue to shine the brilliance of His glory as you walk by faith with a sure hope. Prayers & blessings from upstate NY!
I am praying for you, Josh, and for your mom and for the whole Harris family!!! My first reaction was "NO!!", but then I realized the One Who knew the cancer was there, and Who heals the broken and the wounded......may God do GREAT THINGS, FAR above what we expect, no matter the outcome......our God is gracious!!!
Please let your mom know .... that even though we haven't met, I send a big hug, and that I am praying for her......
With love,
~ Jean Marie
I recently heard about your mom's illness from family who are part of the Hillsboro HOF. Sono has really blessed my life through some of the talks she's given. I've listened repeatedly to them, particularly the one on being a joyful mother to young children. I'm keeping her in prayer, and am so grateful for the hope we have in Christ.
I have been so blessed by your mom. God has used her to speak into my life through her ministry to moms.
I am praying for her and for you all.
The Jeub family will keep your mom in our prayers.

I am praying! Your mom is an awesome lady- the example of what a Christian woman should be.
Blessings to your family~

ASPARAGUS
A GOOD READ - Cancer cure
*Asparagus -- Who knew?*
*This is from a friend*
My Mom had been taking the full-stalk canned style asparagus that she pureed and she took 4 tablespoons in the morning and 4 tablespoons later in the day. She did this for over a month. She is on chemo pills for Stage 3 lung cancer in the pleural area and her cancer cell count went from 386 down to 125 as of this past week. Her oncologist said she does not need to see him for 3 months.
*THE ARTICLE:*
Several years ago, I had a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer. He gave me a photocopied copy of an article, entitled, Asparagus for cancer 'printed in Cancer News Journal, December 1979. I will share it here, just as it was shared with me:
I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health or over 50 years. Several years ago, I
learned of the discovery of Richard R. Vensal, D.D.S. that asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked with him on his project We have accumulated a number of favorable case histories. Here are a few examples:
*Case No. 1,* A man with an almost hopeless case of Hodgkin's disease (cancer of the lymph glands) who was completely incapacitated. Within 1 year of starting the asparagus therapy, his doctors were unable to detect any signs of cancer, and he was back on a schedule of strenuous exercise.
*Case No. 2*, a successful businessman 68 years old who suffered from cancer of the bladder for 16 years. After years of medical treatments, including radiation without improvement, he went on asparagus. Within 3 months, examinations revealed that his bladder tumor had disappeared and that his kidneys were normal.
*Case No. 3,* a man who had lung cancer. On March 5th 1971, he was put on the operating table where they found
lung cancer so widely spread that it was inoperable. The surgeon sewed him up and declared his case hopeless. On April 5th he heard about the Asparagus therapy and immediately started taking it By August, x-ray pictures revealed that all signs of the cancer had disappeared. .
He is back at his regular business routine.
*Case No. 4,* a woman who was troubled for a number of
years with skin cancer. She finally developed different skin cancers which were diagnosed by the acting specialist as advanced. Within 3 months after starting on asparagus, her skin specialist said that her skin looked fine and no more skin lesions. This woman reported that the asparagus therapy also cured her kidney disease, which started in 1949. She had over 10 operations for kidney stones, and was receiving government disability payments for an
inoperable, terminal, kidney condition. She attributes the cure of this kidney trouble entirely to the asparagus.
I was not surprised at this result, as The elements of materia medica', edited in1854 by a Professor at the
University of Pennsylvania, stated that asparagus was used as a popular remedy for kidney stones. He even referred to experiments, in 1739, on the power of asparagus in dissolving stones. Note the dates!
We would have other case histories but the medical
establishment has interfered with our obtaining some of the records. I am therefore appealing to readers to spread this good news and help us to gather a large number of case histories that will overwhelm the medical skeptics about this unbelievably simple and natural remedy.
*For the treatment*
Asparagus should be cooked before using, and therefore canned asparagus is just as good as fresh. I have corresponded with the two leading canners of asparagus, Giant and Stokely, and I am satisfied that these brands contain no pesticides or preservatives.
Place the cooked asparagus in a blender and liquefy to
make a puree, and store in the refrigerator. Give the patient 4 full tablespoons twice daily, morning and evening. Patients usually show some improvement in 2-4 weeks. It can be diluted with water and used as a cold or hot drink. This suggested dosage is based on present experience, but certainly larger amounts can do no harm and may be needed in some cases. As a biochemist I am convinced of the old saying that `what cures can prevent.' Based on this theory, my wife and I have been using asparagus puree as a beverage with our meals. We take 2 tablespoons diluted
in water to suit our taste with breakfast and with dinner. I take mine hot and my wife prefers hers cold.
For years we have made it a practice to have blood surveys taken as part of our regular checkups. The last blood survey, taken by a medical doctor who specializes in the nutritional approach to health, showed substantial improvements in all categories over the last one, and we can attribute these improvements to nothing but the asparagus drink. As a biochemist, I have made an extensive study of all aspects of cancer, and all of the proposed cures. As a result, I am convinced that asparagus fits in better with the latest theories about cancer.
Asparagus contains a good supply of protein called histones_, which are believed to be active in controlling
cell growth.. For that reason, I believe asparagus can be said to contain a substance that I call _cell growth_ normalizer_. That accounts for its action on cancer and in acting as a general body tonic. In any event, regardless of theory, asparagus used as we suggest, is a harmless substance. The FDA cannot prevent you from using it and it may do you much good. It has been reported by the US National Cancer Institute, that asparagus is the highest tested food containing _glutathione_, which is considered one of the body's most potent anticarcinogens and antioxidants.

Keeping your mom and your family in my prayers.
"Casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you." 1 Peter 5:7
I will be praying for your mother and your family. I have admired her from afar simply for the evidence of her work in the lives of her children and how God is using you and your brothers. My son is a "Do Hard Things" fan:)
I was diagnosed with breast cancer January 2009 at age 35. While the diagnosis was devastating in many ways, God has taught me so much about His faithfulness and sovereignty. I have come to know on a deeper level that He is good whether I am healed or not.
I did undergo some conventional therapy, but have pursued a nutritional approach, as well--including cottage cheese and flax oil. At first I did not like it, but have now aquired a taste for it. The more I read, the more I am convinced that God designed our bodies with huge self-healing mechanisms that have been disrupted by our terrible eating patterns. I will pray that she will stay encouraged through the days when the menu is tough to swallow.
Praying peace and a deeper love for Him through this. May He always be glorified in our weakness!
Dear Harris Family,
I met your mother at our first speech and debate tournament at Point Loma, in 2006. She was an incredible encouragement to me, as we were starting up a debate club of our own. She is blessed that her children rise up and call her blessed. We will indeed pray for a miracle for her and if there is anything that us CA families can do....PLEASE let us know.
Your entire family has been an inspiration to so many by all of your personal testimonies and ministries.
We plead for grace to abound, in Christ.

Dear Harris Family,
We continue to pray for your mom and your family. We have passed this request on to our home school support group, family and church. Your family has been such a blessing to our family over the 25+ years of homeschooling from your dad's conferences, books, & teaching as well as the books you and your brothers have written. May the Lord bless you all and touch Sono with His healing hand!
Josh,
We are praying for your mom and all of you, especially since we've spent the year fighting Hal's stage IV cancer that had spread to his liver and spleen and beyond. We pursued both conventional chemotherapy (which was not nearly as bad as we'd been led to believe - we traveled and spoke at homeschool conferences all over in the midst of it) as well as concurrently using alternative therapies.
The good news is that as of April 30th, the cancer is entirely dead! Praise be to God. Our prayer is that the Lord would both heal Sono and encircle you all with His grace and provision as He did our family!
With much love,
Hal and Melanie Young
dear pastor... i am praying for your Mom's healing and strength and faith. i thank her and you for your example in walking out your trust and faith in the Lord. praying with all the saints.
Hi Josh,
I am JC Yu, one of the head organizers of the DHT conference here in Manila, Philippines. As much as we are excited to have your family bless us with the knowledge and the principles your brothers teach and live out it is with great eagerness that the whole team is on our knees praying with you for the healing of your mom. I am sure she is great mother for she has raised up such fine men such as you, Alex, Brett and I am sure your other siblings are just as extraordinary as you.
I am a fan of your books and has been one of the great factors that help choose wisely on my relationships and now I am also a fan of DHT which is very relavant not only to me but to the people I minister to.
All the love and prayers of the Filipino people goes out to you and your family. May the peace that transcends all understanding cover you guys always and may God as so He wills bring healing to your mom.
Looking forward to how God will work in this situation.
My family in I are in prayer as well. Our hearts are with you all as you journey.
Josh,
Praying daily for your whole family. We remember you assisting Sono in her ballet for our daughter's baby shower out on a lawn. We love Sono's joyful dignity that marks your whole family and ministries.

28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,[j] who[k] have been called according to his purpose. 29For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

praying for you mom
This was deeply moving news as I became aware of this tonight as I read Tracy Klicka's Caringbridge post. I will be praying for you all ...I requested prayer from my own email list fellow believers as well.
We are registered to be at the OCEAN conference and hope for the glad tidings of complete deliverance to HIS GLORY as we have marvelled over the years and benefited from the faithfulness of your family's walk and influence in the homeschool community and thus the world for the growing of young 'godly seeds' to the fulfilling of His plan.
May you all find the peace of God that passes all understanding to sustain you in this battle ...He has finished the race and we look forward to many years of your companionship in that which we all desire to finish well.
Hugs

Josh,
We are praying for your family.
Some encouragement - my son, myself, and my sister have all been healed from cancer - including stage 4. My sister did the Budwig diet, and my son and I the raw foods diet and custom homeopathy. Nothing is impossible with God, if it is within the scope of His will.
Praying,
Sandi Q
Just learned about your mom yesterday from Tracey Klicka's post - so I posted the request to our homeschool prayer chain. Some would like to send cards of encouragement and have asked for an address. I don't know if you care to post one, but no matter, we will all be praying.
One of my absolute favorite (homeschool) resources has been your mom's Mary/Martha taped workshop. It is a treasure that I get out every now and then to review for encouragement. I pray your mom will now be encouraged by our prayers.
Blessings,
Sue R.
Josh,
It's been a long time since I've seen your family, but you have remained so close to my heart. And especially your mom-truly one of the most precious people I have ever known. Please convey my deepest love to Sono, my amazing friend - such a beautiful "light of Christ".
We are praying everyday for your family's strength and for our dear Sono's healing and recovery. Let it be dear Lord.... Let it be.

Terry and I will be praying for Sono.

Many, many prayers are with you and your family. I ask God to bless you with His strength and peace during this time, and I pray for healing in the name of Jesus. May the One who made the lame to walk again and the blind to see, comfort and sustain you with the knowledge that HE is in control each step of the way. He will sustain you always.
Many blessings,
Lindy
Praying....
Your family is an inspiration to ours. I know as a mom of seven the work involved. My heart is sad at this but hopeful for you and in prayer. Our whole family is. Bless you, Michelle Hensley
When I read your Mom's diagnosis, it really brought back memories of my own dear Mother. You see, 7 years ago, we heard basically word for word what you guys just heard...stage IV colon cancer that had metastasized to the liver. I can empathize with what your family is going through, and will gladly lift you all up in prayer. "Jesus, I ask you to touch Sono Harris with Your powerful hand of healing...from the very top of her head to the soles of her feet, I ask you to bring Your perfect wholeness to her body. I pray that Your peace that passes ALL understanding will guard the hearts and minds of the Harris family. Thank You for hearing and answering when we call on You. In Jesus' Name, amen.
I will be praying & thank you to the person with the asparagus info
I am praying for you as well, my mother is ending her fight with stage 4 metastic breast cancer here soon, she will be meeting Jesus, it is so hard to lose a mother, but we are not gaurenteed another day on this earth and time is limited in a dying world. Spend as many moments as you can with your mother, memories will always give you peace to know how much your mother adores her children, family and God. I pray for healing and whatever way God decides to heal her, I pray for comfort and strength for your family as well. It is difficult, but God will help you get through anything! Your sis in Christ!
Just wanted to let you know that blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are great cancer fighting agents as well, almonds and omega oils from fish are great cancer fighting agents to, we were told this from cancer treatment centers of america. my mother will pass soon from stage 4 breast cancer, she is only 47 years of age, i will pray for you daily.
I'm praying for Sono, and wanted to encourage you to continue w/the alternative treatments. My MiL had colon cancer and suffered a lot from conventional treatments (we'd never heard of alternative treatments back then), and they didn't do her any good. Also, check into taking Vitamin D -- search mercola.com for Vitamin D. He has an excellent (free of charge) 1-hour online video about Vitamin D and how it effects the entire body, how we Americans are all severely deficient, and how that deficiency allows us to get diseases, including cancer, more easily. Correcting that deficiency can help people recover from cancer.
May God guide you to what is best for you! Praying for you!
-Catherine Mikkola
Dear Josh,
I just learned of your mom's cancer this morning, June 4. Our daughter, Rachel, reads the blog written by Joel's wife. My heart is just broken, but even in that I know the love that Sono has for our Sovereign God. I will be praying for all of you; for peace through the storm, for grace and patience with each other, for strengthened faith and courage, and for joy.
Sono was such a HUGE influence on my life and I think often of her with great gladness and fond memories,
Barbara Garrett
Thanks for preaching at GHOFCC this past Sunday. It was a wonderful message on trust. We are all leaning heavily on Jesus for your mom right now. I originally was scheduled to preach but someone else needed to switch and then you came in for him when he couldn't. God has a way of getting the right message to us at the right time, doesn't He? We love your dad and his "extended" ministry through all of you.
